Dr. Harvey Gordon Thomas, MD

My 75 year old partner Eric was given a diagnosis of A-fib and NPH during 3 days & 2 nights last Christmas, 2019, at YRMC East. The atrial fibrillation was modified, by Eric's great cardiologist, to "persistent;" but the hydrocephalus tests which the neurosurgeon Dr. Harvey Thomas ordered, including the gold standard Cine MRI, came back negative. Dr. Thomas insisted that the Cine MRI, even though state-of-the art, had to be wrong, since Eric had all the symptoms of hydrocephalus, although he admitted it could be something else. We were compliant in all procedures recommended by Dr. Thomas, who did not give us any information about what else Eric's symptoms could indicate. He offered to do the brain shunt insertion for NPH anyway which, if it didn't help, he would just leave in, and admitted that he had done such useless operations before. When we decided against the operation, he dropped Eric & refused, when I requested it, to refer him to a regular neurologist. His exact reply… to me, regarding the referral, was "Why would I do that?" Instead of answering him "To get the diagnosis, prognosis and followup care you haven't given Eric," I realized there was no point. Had Dr. Thomas inquired about degenerative diseases in Eric's family, he would have learned that Eric's symptoms are identical to those of his father's who'd had Parkinson's. Dr. Thomas seemed angry that we were depriving him of his big surgical payday by our agreeing with the negative Cine MRI and inconclusive spinal tap and spinal MRI which he also ordered, and acted as if he couldn't get rid of us fast enough. He said he'd be there if we needed anything else; but since he'd already refused, after all the visits & procedures, to diagnose Eric, suggest other therapies or give him a referral to a doctor who could help him, I can't think of what we'd need from him.

Didn’t care about a full recovery, his part was done. Arrogant and unprofessional.

Dr. Thomas is a very competent surgeon, though it necessitated convincing that the surgical site was originally a lower, not an upper site. I'm healing well. His scheduler failed to do her job requiring an additional 4 hour drive and much unnecessary pain. For some reason he refused to deal with "A"'s incompetence. Amazing how one lazy office person can cause such additional pain and inconvenience as well as cost.

Call me before using this guy for anything...Richard M. Troutte - 928-227-2745. Thomas is a surgeon (42 years) but he is NOT a Doctor. A Doctor is interested in taking a patient to recovery...Thomas is only interest in the surgery and not the major nerve pain you are going to have after surgery. His arrogant, and condscending manner is unbelievable. Call me I would love to talk with you.

This doctor botched my lumbar fusion requiring me to undergo extensive revision surgery which left me permanently, neurologically damaged below my fusion level due to incorrect placement of sugical hardware.

He is an exceptional surgeon but his beside manner is terrible and he doesn't spend the time with his patients that he should. Following up is difficult.

I certainly can NOT recommend Dr. Thomas. His surgery on my back only made my symptoms considerably worse. And for that he took no responsibility. He was arrogant and condescending which is likely a character flaw. He resents questions about the procedures and doesn't even go over the reports of the tests he orders. His staff is not very reliable. By all means, look for a different surgeon if you need neurosurgery.

I have been a patient of this doctor for over 9 years, and have had 3 surgeries performed by Dr. Thomas. I also have recommended him to several friends, and they,too, have the same opinion of him. Dr.Thomas is very personable,very concerning, has a great bedside manner, takes the time to explain and answer any questions thoroughly, and of course, more importantly, does a great job on surgery. Also, Dr. Thomas does not rush into surgery------as he says----before I get the knife out, let's try this, etc.Excellent all around!!!!!!

Dr. Thomas performed two back surgeries on me with three years. I found him to be professional, caring, very understanding and a master of his trade. I have recommended him to many friends as the best of the best.
