Dr. Hillard Theophilus Spencer, MD

My son broke his radius bone and we didn't know if he would need surgery or just a cast. I was somewhat nervous because of previous bad experiences with Kaiser dermatologists and other doctors outside of Kaiser that were clearly incompetent. After a few minutes of speaking with Dr Spencer, I was able to relax because he is clearly highly intelligent and competent. He does not have a smooth "customer service" demeanor but that's that's not a reasonable expectation for a specialist doctor. I want a doctor that is extremely smart, experienced and keeps up with the latest science, not one with the selling skills of a Williams Sonoma rep. He treated my son with kindness and empathy during the 3 appointments and even helped the cast technician with the initial cast. He answered all questions I had and had great suggestions for building strength after the cast was finally removed.

We took my son in for broken bones. His entire demeanor was creepy and uninviting for a child. He was barely audible and spoke in an uncomfortable high pitched voice. My son kept looking to my wife and I for reassurance that we were bringing him to someone safe.

Extremely dismissive we had an awful experience with him. He spoke to my child in a high pitch squeal that was honestly frightening. He said the type of break my child has will heal on its own without a cast. I tried explaining to him that the crutches are a pain for him since he’s so young. He brushed it off and said the pain will probably get better within the next week so just bear with it until then. He didn’t want to do another round of X-rays, he hardly looked at my child’s foot I feel like I someone off the street could have provided better medical care and insight.

Extremely poor quality of medical examination. It lasted 5 seconds. The guy did not even look at X-Rays. The saddest part is that the patient is an 8-years old kid! Stay away at all costs!

I brought my son to him for a second opinion on a surgical procedure and he really gave us all the time we needed to understand all our options and explained it really thoroughly.

He took the time to explain everything and all the options before my daughter's back surgery. We were very comfortable with his experience and the surgery turned out perfectly!
