Dr. Ho-Keung Fred Fu, MD

I am a surgeon myself, and did my research before flying to Pittsburgh from the western US to have my ACL reconstructed by Dr. Fu. My experience with him was outstanding, and I'm very happy with my knee, which feels and performs like normal. I flew to PA to have my surgery by Dr. Fu because I was concerned about having not only a good short term result, but the best long term outcome for many years to come. Dr. Fu is the best.

Had ACL and meniscus surgery after tearing both of those as well as my MCL. A month out and was not healing correctly. Would not listen to concerns, too many interns and students who he would rather pay attention to in the room with you during your appointments. Long story short, five months later he did another "surgery" which was a manipulation to break up scar tissue. Still was not healing properly. I identified a piece of hardware, which I thought was a screw used during surgery, coming out of my knee and causing pain. I was repeatedly told by everyone including therapist, assistants and Fu himself that it was impossible because they use dissolving screws and that it was a calcium deposit. Also told them I thought I re tore my meniscus in therapy as I felt it happen while doing an excerise on a machine. Also still having issues with bending it because of scar tissue. After complaining for so long they did another MRI and said everything looked normal. Then referred me to a pain… clinic to get meds telling me that sometimes the brain gets confused about pain. I refused and went to another surgeon as soon as I could because I knew something was really wrong with my knee. The new surgeon looked at the MRI that Fu took that I had brought with me and literally within 5 minutes had diagnosed another meniscal tear, scar tissue, as well as a STAPLE in my knee that I never knew was in there. THEY denied any hardware was in my knee, much less a staple. This staple was rubbing on my hamstring tendon and causing it to inflame when I would run, which then caused alot of the pain I was having. After a third surgery, this time with the new surgeon, I'm fine. Removed the staple, tons of scar tissue, and fixed my meniscal tear, all of which Fu denied I had. They were prepared to just send me to a pain clinic instead of admitting it was messed up. Told him I didnt want to mask the problem, i wanted it fixed. I'm not convinced he doesn't allow his students to operate on the "common" patients and just do surgeries himself on the famous athletes he sees. At any rate, please do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

I don't know much about the Doc, but I wrote him an email on a Sunday afternoon with my torn ACL elevated in my recliner , after finding him on the web and not only did he respond to the email, but he called me. Wow!

Do yourself a favor and go with a surgeon that wont rush and will actually look at your chart and accurately deal with your situation. I was hesitant after reading some of these reviews but due to his reputation as a top notch surgeon and ability to do double bundle decided to go with him (he didnt do the double bundle with no explanation why). I regret that decision a month out from acl and meniscus surgery. He stands next to you and orders the seven other students in the room to do his job and wont even touch your leg. He told me i had to have a particular graft and then said something completely opposite during the next visit. When i reminded him what he initially said and why, he then went with his original decision and said thanks for reminding me. The post op care is horrendous as you will see numerous other people and he makes an appearance for about thirty seconds, says everything is good despite obvious issues (having problems with flexion), and rushes out the door not wanting… to answer questions. If you do ask a question, dont expect a better response other than everything is good. When you sit in the room you can hear the others trying to brief him on your case before he walks in and they get out about half a sentence before he comes in not knowing anything about your case or looking at your file. In fact he orders others to make notes in it as if he is beneath touching the file or your leg. Something is definately wrong with my healing process and it appears i may need to switch dr's if I want to get the problem resolved before it is too late. Very disappointed that I didnt listen to my gut and go with someone more caring and willing to give you the time of day. Skill means nothing if you rush through things so much so that errors are made and things are overlooked.

I saw some of the negative reviews on this site and was compelled to share my experience with Dr. Fu. After 3 unsuccessful knee operations with another doctor, I was referred to Dr. Fu. Dr. Fu has changed my life. After years with daily pain and knee dislocations, Dr. Fu performed reconstructive surgery on each of my knees. I had the procedures done years ago and I still am without pain. This man is amazing. Dr. Fu spends the time that is necessary with his patients. He has always answered my questions, and was amazing with his care and post-op follow-up. I was so impressed with Dr. Fu, that years after my operations were performed, I recommended Dr. Fu to my husband. We flew from Atlanta to Pittsburgh just to see Dr. Fu. Again, we were not disappointed. This man changes lives and I would (and have) recommended him to anyone that requires his expertise.

He's such a famous and great doctor, yet he is down to earth and cares about his patients. My daughter was so lucky that Dr. Fu did her ACL surgery. He's truly a great person!

Horrible experience with this doctor- he has made himself 'popular' but his follow up care is pathetic at best

After waiting over an hour, it became evident that Dr. Fu had way to many patients to see in a day so as to give me enough time. When I finally did see him, he was rushed (I later found out that people call him "fast freddie" because he operates way too fast in the operating room), didn't have much time to address my questions, and barely put his hands on me to examine my knee. He spent less than 7 minutes with me (I saw the clock on the way in and out), told me I had a full tear of the ACL and expected me to let him operate on my knee. NO way I would let someone like him rush through a surgery on my knee for an ACL tear. I later sought a second opinion with Dr. McMahon, who was an absolute gentleman, and he told me I also had a meniscal tear. He even showed me the radiology report to confirm that two physicians saw this. Dr. Fu had completely missed the mieniscal tear, and I'm not surprised, considering how rushed and careless he was during my appointment.

I was very pleased with my experience with Dr. Fu and the UPMC staff (his PA and admin were outstanding). I already knew my ACL was torn so diagnosing wasn't an issue. And I'm less than a year from surgery so I don't know the long term outcome but I've had no problems so far. Dr. Fu's manner does make visits feel rushed but I came armed with questions to ask and he patiently answered every one. In fact he took additional time to explain his surgical philosophy. Make sure you have good knowledge of your situation and don't back down from challenging your doctors. Dr. Fu logically explained why he wanted treat my knee like he did.

I had a meniscus and ACL transplant. This procedure was done at the same time. It has been several years and I am still having problems. A recent MRI showed that the ACL and meniscus are not correctly located. Dr. Fu did not spend time discussing my problems, concerns, procedures or rehab. Too hasty with patients. I am not at all pleased with my overall results. I will be having surgery again - but not by Dr. Fu.
