Dr. Hugh Smisson specializes in minimally invasive treatment of the spinal cord, including cervical, thoracic and lumbar disease. As such, he has developed techniques and created appliances for his areas of expertise including a spinal fusion device for the cervical spine as well as a minimally invasive spinal fusion device for the lumbar spine both of which are currently used throughout the United States and Europe. In addition, Dr. Smisson holds over 25 U.S. and international patents for a variety of medical appliances used not only in spinal fusion technology, but also in fluid infusion, body temperature warming, and sternal stabilization. Dr. Smisson has taught his pioneering techniques to many other medical professionals in the United States, Europe and South America. As knowledge of his neurosurgical advancements spreads, he is much in demand as a speaker.A Macon native, Dr. Smisson received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Emory University in 1979. Two …years later, he entered the Medical College of Georgia where he received his Doctorate of Medicine in 1986. After completing an internship in General Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia in 1987, he entered a neurosurgical residence there, which he completed in 1992 before coming back to Macon to start his practice at Georgia Neurosurgical Institute. Dr. Smisson was board certified in Neurological Surgery in 1995 and became a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons in 1998. He also served as a surgical Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve.Dr. Smisson has served as an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Mercer University as well as a Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Georgia. He is on the alumni board at the Medical College of Georgia and is a Past President of the Georgia Neurosurgical Society.

Dr.Smisson has done three of my surgeries and has been very clear in explaining what was going to be done and what to expect afterwards. He gets to the pain so that you can get on and live your life pain free.l recommend doctor Smisson to everyone that says they have back pain.

I was told about Dr. Sisson about 3 yrs ago from my now Daughter in law. Dr. Smission performed her neck surgery and had great success. I had gotten to the point that I had to have something done to my lower back , I had two Ruptured disk . So in the spring of 2023 , I made the 120 mile trip up for my first appointment and I really liked him and his staff. So in June of 2023 I had surgery and had excellent success. I highly recommend Dr.Smisson and his team they are very professional and friendly. Thank you Dr. Sisson for helping me.

He did great job on back surgery and got me into shepherd center in altanta for rehab.

Dr Smisson, and his staff, have been impeccable through my daughters journey. She sustained a broken back last month in a MVC, which was two days before her high school graduation. While in the hospital she had her cap, gown, and chords hanging above her bed and they took a brief moment to acknowledge her (it may not seem like much, but it meant everything to her) and congratulate her. Surgery went well and she is on her way to recovery. We are forever grateful for his expertise and support during this time. I would highly recommend him and his staff. (AND he has a great bedside manner - it’s not often you find a neurosurgeon with a sense of humor! He’s definitely the whole package!)

When I first came to see Dr Smisson, I was mostly bed confined and could barely walk and in extreme pain. He determined I needed surgery since I had vertebrae that had shifted and collapsed onto the nerves in my lower spine. The surgery went well that day and I walked out around noon. It has been a year since my surgery. I am much improved. I have rheumatoid arthritis and know I will never be like I was 20 years ago but my quality of life is very much improved. Dr Smisson was the answer I was looking for. He was always caring and concerned with a very pleasing bedside manner. I have nothing but respect and praise for Dr Smisson
