Dr. Ira Pincus Markowitz, MD

This is my brother's story from 10 years ago. I hope Dr. Markowitz has changed his ways, but based on some reviews here, I wonder. If you are uninsured and considering treatment from Dr. Markowitz, please read this: While my brother was in the ICU at Touro Infirmary in NOLA - suffering from an the aftermath of an embolized myxoma - Dr. Markowitz contacted my brother's son and demanded payment for his surgical services within two days in the amount of $10,000. If payment was not rendered, Dr. Markowitz said my brother would have to be transferred to the "clinic.” When my nephew asked what the "clinic" was and if my brother would be receiving the same high level of care, he stated that treatment at the "clinic" may not be as good and that he would no longer be treating my brother. I followed up via a phone call to Dr. Markowitz and asked him to clarify his statements to my nephew. He soon became irate and said I had “buried my head in the sand” and that he had a "family to… feed.” He proceeded to verbally bully me by saying that I needed to "be a man" and "step up to the plate" to pay for my brother's surgery. He stated that, if we did not pay him, he would no longer be able to treat my brother and he would have to transfer him to the “clinic." I asked Dr. Markowitz if that was some sort of threat; he then said, "I don't have time for this! Call my office," and hung up on me. Needless to say, I am disappointed that the doctor feels so strongly about getting paid that he would go so far as to try to threaten, lie to, and intimidate me and my nephew. I sent complaints to the LSBME and the hospital admin. The LSBME found nothing illegal, but that was not the reason for my complaint - I believe his behavior was in fact unethical. The AMA does not enforce their ethical standards. The hospital kept the results of their investigation secret. So much for transparency. But at least they looked into it. Beware.

Dr. Markowitz diagnosed a subclavian carotid blockage in my neck in 2000 and performed bypass surgery almost immediately. He was very direct, very professional.

Without a shadow of a doubt this.this...well Ira P Markowitz is a child. And just think if the above 4 star reviews are genuine ( which they of course aren't). Then he is one bipolar madman because the previous 4 one stars are logically True.

Complete jerk and will seriously harm you if you go to him. All he wants is patients money and doesnt care about anyone.

I would not be alive today if it were not for Dr. Markowitz. I cannot thank this man enough for what he has done for me

Dr. Markowitz is a very kind and professional person. His focus is on the consistent care for his patients. He is a type A personality, and exhausts all means for the needs of his clientell. He acts fast on aberrant findings. I trust myself to his care. His office staff are so sweet, caring, and assist in all ways the needs of the patient. I highly recommend any one looking for a Dr. that is a patient advocate to go to him.

I went to see Dr. Markowitz because I had pain in my legs. He walked in and spent 45 minutes with me going through my history. First of all, no doctor ever spends 45 minutes with a patient, but he really took his time with me. His staff was very nice and helpful. After going through many tests, He diagnosed me with P.A.D. (which is low blood-flow), and I needed to have surgery. Its been 6 months since my surgery and I feel great. No more pain in my leg! Dr. Markowitz is very confident in his work. He is an excellent surgeon and I would reccommend anyone seeing him if you have bloodflow problems or pain in your legs or feet.
