Dr. James Francis Mackin

Dr. Mackin is tops. He knows how to accurately diagnose and treat problems with the endocrine system. He has helped me immensely. I've sent several family members and friends to Dr. Mackin and they have all been pleased as well.

I will never go back there after my experience last week. Dr. Mackin asked me to get naked and sit on exam table with back part of dress-cover open but didn't bother putting hygienic cover. He also didn't bother having an assistant in the room with us during that time when I was naked and stayed inside the room while i was undressing behind the curtain. He measured my temperature and it said 100.2/ A few minutes later when he wrote down his observation he wrote and read to me while writing " temperature is 97.8.." So I corrected him and he said he can check again. when he checked again the temperature showed 100.2 again but then he said that it was probably just high because I am jumpy (I was slightly moving because ye was holding the thermometer too far for me to comfortable put under my tongue. He was also generally not nice and hard to communicate with.

Terrible bedside manner: he's gruff, insensitive, and completely oblivious to how he comes across to others. Do not go there.

Not only did my appointment include a lesson in medicine and history - I was asked more detailed question by Dr. Mackin on my first visit than I have ever been asked at another physician's practice (and I have been to some wonderful doctors). On my follow-up appointment, which they called me to set up, He read through every element on my blood work-up so that I understood the entire composition. Not only is he very kind and accessible, he also saw my health issues as a problem to solve rather than just treat.

Dr Mackin doesn't keep patients waiting past their appointment time and will see me earlier if he's available. His office staff is friendly, efficient, caring. His partners are friendly. Dr Mackin takes time; I never feel rushed. He answers questions thoughtfully and explains his answers. He has a dry sense of humor. He is encouraging in giving advice and explains the foreseeable result of not following his advice. I have looked long and hard for such a good doctor.

Mackin is a product of 1950s medical culture. Very condescending attitude toward patients and staff. Once informed me that my 130/70 bp was "terrible." When I asked him about vaccinations before traveling to Argentina and Brazil he looked up those countries, found that several vaccines were DOS recommended and, with a grimace, muttered "Who in their right mind would ever go there?"

Dr. Mackin is a little difficult to communicate with, and his methods seems outdated. He was probably once very intelligent, but he seems a little out of it, and doesn't listen well at all. A little cranky at times, and patronizing at others. I think he means well, but I don't want my health in his hands. Also the dressing behind the curtain while he's in the room at his desk thing was a little unconventional-maybe that's how they did it back in his day....?

It took me a while to get an initial appointment with Dr. Mackin, but I supposed that's true of most specialist. He was thorough and spent a lot of time with me -- more than my time slot alloted. He asked a lot of questions and check his reference books once or twice. I too am female and undressed in the exam room, but a curtain was pulled across and while Dr. Mackin remained, he sat at his desk to review my file. While examining me, he took extra care to make sure I was only uncovered in the area he was examining. There was nothing inappropriate about my visit and I would recommend him to friends and family.
