Dr. Jeffrey Allen Koempel, MD

Dr. Koempel is incredible. He is an extremely talented surgeon and truly cares about his patients.

I felt very uncertain talking to him, he seems uncaring and rush, very stressful and unclear

I have 2 kids 6 and 4 years respectively, so I have seen a lot of pediatric doctors and can say with confidence that Dr. Koempel is the least caring doctor I have seen. When my son was barely 2 years old, we took him to Dr. Koempel 3 times for adenoid surgery consultation and all 3 times he did a comprehensive ear, nose, throat examination. Eventually, per his advice, we scheduled a surgery. It was a big decision for us because we had to put him through general anesthesia and that may be risky for 2 year old kids. We shared these reservations with Dr. Koempel and he knew that we were struggling. Finally, we decided to do the surgery because our son was not breathing well and that was a risk, too. When Dr. Koempel came out of the surgery room, among other things he causally mentioned that our son's tonsils are enlarged, too. Somehow he missed it 3 times examining him in the prior month! And, he said, he would have removed the tonsils, but since it was not on the consent form he did… not. And he knew that both parents were standing outside during the surgery! He could have EASILY come out, share with us that he had missed the tonsils and ask for a consent to remove these as well. Instead, he just casually mentioned it at the end. My son is still not breathing normally at night and after showing him to a number of other doctors we now have to put him through another general anesthesia to remove the tonsils. All thanks to the carelessness of Dr. Koempel.

Daughter failed her hearing test at school twice. Dr said her ears looked fine and most likely the test at school was wrong and to go have another one done at CHLA. Opted for an audiology test closer to my house where she failed it tremendously and the dr took one look in her ears and said she has fluid in them and needs tubes. She has recently had tubes put in and within the first day she commented on how everything is so loud. So not sure how this dr didn't catch something so obvious.

Dr. Koempel and his staff are thoughtful, responsive, and professional. They responded to our questions over the phone and via e-mail. We were thrilled with the care our son received before, during, and after his tonsillectomy. We highly recommend him!

Dr. Koempel was incredible with my child. He clearly explained all issues and options. He was thorough and engaging, showing genuine concern for the well being of my child. I would have preferred to have my child's surgery somewhere other than Children's Hospital, as it left a lot to be desired, but the experience with Dr. Koempel made the the poor hospital experience worth it in the end.
