Jeffrey C. Mai, MD, PhD, is a cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Associate Professor at the Georgetown University Department of Neurosurgery. He is one of the few dual fellowship-trained vascular neurosurgeons in the country, specializing in the treatment and management of cerebrovascular disorders, such as stroke, aneurysm, brain and spinal arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations, and skull base tumors, in addition to spinal disorders.
Dr. Mai received his undergraduate degree in biology from Brown University and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine while simultaneously earning a PhD in biochemistry and molecular genetics. His doctoral work centered upon the development of targeted molecular therapies for cancer and stroke. He then joined the University of Washington, Seattle, for neurosurgical residency training, spending an enfolded year as a neurosurgical specialist registrar in …the NHS at St. George's Hospital in London. Upon graduation, Dr. Mai went on to serve as Acting Instructor at the University of Washington, completing a fellowship in neurosurgical oncology, skull base surgery, and cerebrovascular surgery. Following this, he completed a second fellowship in endovascular surgical neuroradiology at the University of Florida, Gainesville.
Dr. Mai is able to offer a comprehensive set of cutting edge tools to address the spectrum of cerebrovascular disorders. In particular, recent breakthroughs in neurointerventional technology have opened up an entirely new field of acute stroke therapy, revolutionizing patient outcomes.
Dr. Mai joined MedStar Washington Hospital Center to become part of a multidisciplinary cerebrovascular team comprised of national leaders, including interventional neuroradiologists, interventional neurologists, and dual-trained cerebrovascular neurosurgeons. This group of physicians collectively draws upon decades of experience, serving as a unique asset to patients within the D.C. metro region and beyond.
