Dr. John F Gottlieb, MD

Dr. Gottlieb is a psychiatrist on staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. He has been practicing adult psychiatry since 1989. Dr. Gottlieb specializes in the evaluation and treatment of mood disorders in general, and bipolar disorders in particular. He leads a small group practice of other clinicians who share this area of interest and specialization. Together, they offer a range of the most up-to-date and comprehensive clinical services for patients suffering from recurrent mood disorders. This includes both algorithm-driven and innovative psychopharmacologic treatments, a variety of general and disorder-specific psychotherapies, and family counseling designed for these diagnostic groups. the full spectrum of mood disorders, Dr. Gottlieb and his associates also treat a limited number of other conditions including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. These disorders all arise from a mixture of biogenetic and psychological factors, often requiring the use and synthesis of medication, symptom-specific psychological treatments, psychoeducation, along with traditional psychotherapy. It is the capability of, and commitment to, addressing this full range of treatment needs that distinguishes Dr. Gottlieb's practice. Dr. Gottlieb has served as a psychiatric consultant to judicial, religious, and mental health organizations. He also has received awards from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (June 1990) and the University of Illinois Medical School (James Scholar - 1984). He is currently a member of the International Society of Bipolar Disorders, the Academy of Organizational and Occupational Psychiatry, and the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology. His bibliography includes fifteen presentations and workshops along with seven publications. He is active in the Department of Psychiatry where he teaches and supervises residents. Dr. Gottlieb received his medical education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed his internship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, and completed his psychiatry residency at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He received his board certification in psychiatry in June of 1990.
