Dr. John Michael Kast, MD

Dr. Kast behavior in his office is outdated and his bedside manner is atrocious. This is a very bad combination for people of color who struggle to do obtain equity in the medical field. My mom has been a patient of his for over a year and still has no definitive diagnosis of her brain tumor. Instead of owning the fact that he is uninterested and unmotivated to treat people of color and his obvious distain for our presence but definitely overbill her insurance company, he decided to call me rude for simply being fed up with his lack of care and decided to leave. Because the door knob hit the bed when I opened it to leave, his ego felt the need to try to correct my silent and wordless exit by calling me rude and saying I had an attitude and asked me to leave. The days are gone where white doctors can dismiss black women as angry black women and dismiss them to deflect from their mediocrity. I rejected his label, he didn't like that I took the attention off his frailty and returned it to… his in luck of care of my mother. I have contacted my attorney, the Alabama joint commission and have attempted to contact the office manager in his office but am currently being avoided because they think I will go away. That is a mistake. The longer his office takes to respond further proves my point. I do not want her insurance charged for this visit because literally he did nothing to earn one dime.

I had more problems after he"fixed " the issue than before. Do yourself a favor and go to HSV or BHAM

excellent, he was always so kind and thoughtful and listened to your questions and gave you all the time needed either in the hospital or for office visits.

Excellent manner. Thorough examination. Knows his field and I highly recommend him.

Having been turned down for surgery by UAB neurosurgeon, husband was accepted as patient by Dr. Kast. He performed surgery on two different spine sites & with two different issues: stenosis & malformed vertebra in lower back. Once headed for a wheelchair in near future, husband now walks over a mile with no assistance. Shoals is fortunate to have Dr. Kast practice here. We found him an excellent communicator prior to & after surgery, explaining exactly what procedures would be performed so laymen could easily understand, without condescending. A gentleman he is & patient.
