Dr. John R. Macfarlane, MD

Dr. MacFarlane has done surgery on my neck and lower back several times. He is always very knowledgeable and thorough in his explanations and options. He doesn't rush to surgery, but uses a very well thought approach. I appreciate his candor and honesty and there is no other surgeon I want operating on my spine. He is the best!

My husband had stenosis so severe that he could hardly walk without assistance. We finally had physical therapy (a joke!) and then consulted with primary doc (MPellatt) who scheduled MRI. we then went to Smart Clinic for analysis and options for treatment. Dr Pellatt AND the Smart Clinic recommended Dr Macfarlane for surgery. Yes we waited 2 months to actually see Dr Macfarlane but his office does not make appointments without his first reading MRI etc and determining IF indeed he can help you. After he reviewed the MRI his office called us to make the appt. We had surgery 3 weeks after our visit with him. My husband and I are so happy with the results. yes we would definitely recommend him. He has a very DIRECT bedside manner which we found to be very helpful and to the point. Thank you Dr. Mcfarlane

Wouldn't trust my back to any other surgeon. Dr. Macfarlane was excellent.

Went in for a broken neck, he looked at the x-rays, then talked about skiing for for 5 minutes, as I had broken it skiing. He got up and left. Nurse came in and took me back to the waiting room. I was confused and realized the visit was over. I had to get the receptionists attention again to get the nurse to get me the prescription they were supposed to give me. I never even got to ask any questions. I don't know what I was supposed to do to take care of myself. They never scheduled a follow up, I had to call in later for it. Afterwards I was really emotional and upset. ie grown man crying with his mother in the car.... Make sure you have a list of questions written down you want to ask before you let him leave. I learned a lot from his bedside manner and now ask as many questions to the doc as they ask me. I never want to feel like that again.

Thank you for you compassion for the pain I had been in for so long so long and the speed in which you got me into surgery Your reassurance of my fears, surgery pain, which I expected and you explained thoroughly. I no loner have headaches and arm pain is almost nonexistent , just pain/discomfort and not too bad for being 3 days post op. Pain causes so many other problems, my spirits have been lifted and I feel hopeful again. Thank you and your staff. you all have been the greatest !!

Very understanding and friendly. I had a herniated disc and he performed the surgery. I am very satisfied with the results. I would go back to him

Dr. MacFarlane saw me after an accident that fractured my skull. Although I was in denial as to the seriousness of it, he was very forthright with his diagnosis and advice. It was obvious he was extremely knowledgeable and that I should heed the advice. He not only had the best bedside manner of any physician I have ever seen, but he literally saved my life. He was very kind throughout it all as well. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.

Even though I had developed an unusual infection after my surgery creating problems, Dr. Macfarlane was very thourough, sensitive, and supportive throughout this ordeal. I would highly recommend him. He was very patient and understanding even after the operation, being in the hospital after developing sepsis. In my opinion if you are considering surgery as an option, you should think long and hard about all possibilities and ask as many questions as possible. I am thankful that he was there for me throughout this. I may not agree with his final evaluation, but I do not think this affects his performance as a surgeon or his level of compassion.

Dr.Macfarlane did a recent lower lumber fusion on me. I had visited many Doctors before I chose Dr. Macfarland. He made me feel that I was important and my ailment was important too. He smiled alot, even cracked a couple of jokes. I was impressed with him and would feel comfortable sending any of my family to him.

I found Dr. Macfarlane to be very difficult to contact and make an appointment (2 months). Once I was finally able to see him, he was going to consult with some colleagues following the appointment. Three weeks later, with no response from his office, I called to follow-up, only to get a terse response from an office nurse and an answer that had nothing to do with the original questions I had presented him with. It seemed that Dr. Macfarlane either either forgot or was disinterested in helping me. I would not recommend him.
