I was a late in life mother seeking help for a very difficult child. It must be stated here that researchers are only just beginning to better understand and diagnose people with Aspergerâ??s Syndrome. Recognizing it 16 years ago was not an exact science. I started trying to get help for my daughter when she was 9 month old. I know she was fidgety responsive only to certain stimuli and her early development normal in some ways but delayed and was quite unusual (for the lack of a better word) in others. I was referred to Dr. Yost when my daughter was ready to enter kindergarten. She had already been diagnosed as ADHD by Dr Robert Brower however; she still was showing other traits as well. She was extremely over sensitized to a critical level; had very limited eye contact, limited self help skills, uncoordinated motor development yet had normal fine motor skill development, was attached to certain things to a point that she would regress without them, objected to certain foods with… a smooth consistency, delayed language and processing skills, preservative behaviors and more. Prior to our first meeting I was given 2 test batteries to complete. I had such a hard time with them as they were difficult to apply a rating in some areas. I wrote notes and tried to explain that I could not rate the item. All in all the test batteries used did not coincide with any type of solid reflection of my daughters condition. Dr. Yost met with us and then wrote up an analysis explaining that my daughters condition had scattered traits that may or may not appear on the autism spectrum. On a professional back note he wrote in her file that I had tried to skew the test results. I did not know that he had included this in his report; so that any time I looked for help for my daughter other professionals disregarded what I had to say. So instead of asking me to complete new test batteries of a different sort, he chose to de-characterize me in such a way that when I was looking for professional help for my daughter, some professionals saw the "back note" and didn't believe what I was telling them. As my daughter matured more and more supports were removed from her that I felt could have and should have been kept in place and I think it probably stemmed from Dr. Yostâ??s â??Back Notesâ??. This went on for many years until in 2011 I went to Easter seals and met with another Dr. for another diagnosis. That was when my daughter was diagnosed with Aspergerâ??s. I also went back to Dr. Yost for a second clinical assessment with my daughter as I needed her records updated. And this is what he said to me. â??I am giving you what you want . I donâ??t ever want to see you back here again.â?? His back notes were hurtful, and his comment to me uncalled for. Itâ??s a crazy world out there for many children growing up with Asperger's. This is not a â??Made up Conditionâ?? and if you are a parent of a child and you suspect that your child may have this condition; Dr. Kelly Yost is not the one you want diagnosing your child.
