I have now had both knees replaced by Dr. Joey Romero, and the difference between the two surgeries has been remarkable. My first replacement was the traditional approach, cutting through muscle and tendon. My second, six weeks ago, was the muscle-sparing approach Dr. Romero used. The Jiffy is a branded name for a subvastus approach. Jiffy and subvastus are the same thing. If you see either term, it is the same advanced technique that preserves the quadriceps tendon and surrounding muscles instead of cutting through them. Dr. Romero also uses Stryker implants and the Mako robotic system. He explained to me that the ADVANCED robotic precision in placing and aligning the implant is designed to deliver far better long-term results. The early recovery has been dramatic. I had roughly 50% less pain and a recovery about 50% faster. There was less swelling, mobility came back sooner, and most days I managed with a non-narcotic pain reliever. I am on track to be back on the pickleball court… in about three months, compared to six months after my first surgery. Every patient is different, so ask Dr. Romero whether you are a candidate. If you live in the Austin area and need a knee replacement, ask about the Jiffy or subvastus approach and the Mako robotic technology. I cannot recommend Dr. Romero and his team enough.
