Dr. Joseph Michael Stefko, MD

I really like Dr Stefko. He has been around for a long time and knows what he is doing. He also talks straight to you and in a way you definitely understand. I would recommend him to friends and family.

Dr. Stefko was very thorough about explaining all the details of my rotator cuff tear and what needed to be done to rectify the damage I had done. Very professional and didn't rush.

My husband Earl had his shoulder rebuilt by Dr. Stefko. We both very pleased with the doctor and Youngstown Orthopedic. Very personable and informative.

Dr Stefko has done surgery on each of my shoulders and a knee. I could not be more pleased with each outcome. For each surgery, he explained what to expect from the surgery and what to expect for an outcome. He has done a fantastic job on all three surgeries. I would highly recommend him. I chose YOA because my father spoke positively of his experience with Dr. Stefko and the staff there. Unfortunately, my experience has not been as positive. At no time during the first two appointments did we discuss recovery and what I should expect after surgery. It would also have helped to know what supplies I would need at home to clean and redress my wounds daily. When I went to get measured and fitted for the sling I would wear after the procedure, I waited about 15 - 18 minutes beyond my appointment time and then I'm guessing the person responsible for doing the fitting came out and just handed me a sling. No measuring at all. I am 5' 11" and have long arms as you may guess, the portion of the sling for my forearm is too short and does not support my wrist and hand as it should. I went to see the physical therapist 3 days after surgery and she stated almost immediately upon seeing the sling that it was too small and not adjusted correctly. She did what she could for me and… removed the surgical packing and put badages on the surgical sites. My next visit was to have the stitches removed and get an x-ray to check the injury. I waited over 40 minutes before asking how much longer of a wait. I was told vaguely that the doctors were all running behind. It turns out that they were having issues with their x-ray system. This should have been communicated when I checked in. I finally go back on the person removing the stitches was tugging on the sling attempting to get my arm adjusted correctly. I then told her about my "fitting" experience and she said she would notify the supervisor for that department. Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. I also told my surgeon the same story. Was I offered to be properly fitted for a sling...NO. My recovery for the next month or so means my arm should be immobilized 24/7 unless I am showering, so there should be a part of the sling that immobilizes my arm so that I do not undo the surgeon's work. I don't have that part and it was not mentioned or offered. Would I recommend YOA to someone.....maybe but with a warning.

Dr. Stefko and his staff are the best. I love going there. All are very friendly and professional. He takes his time and explains all issues to a T. I will never go anywhere else!!!
