Dr. Julian J Sonnenfeld, MD

Julian J. Sonnenfeld, M.D., is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Orlin & Cohen specializing in the operative and non-operative treatment of athletes of all ages and skill levels, including pediatric and adult patients. He is an expert in arthroscopic and open surgery of the knee, shoulder, and elbow. Dr. Sonnenfeld is a former athlete who competed at the national level in baseball. After receiving a B.A. in Biology from Wesleyan University, he graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine and was awarded Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he was awarded the Ira Wolfe Award for Excellence in Sports Medicine Research. Following residency, Dr. Sonnenfeld completed a fellowship in sports medicine, shoulder, and elbow surgery at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC. While there, he served as a team physician for multiple professional and collegiate teams such as the …NFL’s Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Knights, AAA Affiliate of MLB's Chicago White Sox.Dr. Sonnenfeld has a particular interest in advanced shoulder disorders and complex shoulder pathologies, focusing on shoulder instability, surgical and non-surgical management of arthritis, rotator cuff disorders, and frozen shoulder. His knee practice focuses on cartilage restoration, meniscus injuries, ligament reconstruction, knee dislocations, and patellofemoral disorders, while his elbow expertise includes treatment for medial/lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), instability, and ligament reconstruction. Dr. Sonnenfeld also leverages the latest orthobiologic treatments in his practice, including platelet rich plasma (PRP), to provide athletes with a full spectrum of treatment options.Throughout his training, Dr. Sonnenfeld has been active in academic research having published over 40 articles, book chapters, and exhibits on a variety of topics related to ACL reconstruction, Tommy John surgery (UCL reconstruction), hip arthroscopy, shoulder arthroplasty, surgical techniques and post-operative physical therapy protocols. In his free time, Dr. Sonnenfeld enjoys hiking, golfing, fishing and spending time with his wife and son.
