Dr. Kenneth Tungwei Kaan, MD

I had had debilitating sciatic nerve pain in my left leg that made standing or walking not only difficult but excruciating. I met with Dr Kaan on Kauai who explained in detail what was causing pain and would also require spine fusion at the same time as disc surgery. His staff was wonderful scheduling my surgery the next week. The surgery took nine hours and required a three-day hospital stay. Dr Kaan would come early every morning to check my status. I have had a few follow up appointments and now I am totally pain free enjoying life. Great staff...great surgeon!

I waited over two months for this appointment regarding my scoliosis which has been causing a lot of pain for me. After waiting a month and driving an hour to see Dr. Kahn he spends the first 10 minutes of our appointment patronizing me on how my pregnant wife has to go and get vaccinated for covid, and how it was her fault that we now face the delta variant. Mind you this was before any word on whether it was even safe for pregnant women to receive the vaccine and since we personally know two people who had miscarriages after getting vaccinated late into their pregnancy we decided it was better if she waited until after the birth. Now that was the first 10 minutes, the remainder of the appointment consisted of him babbling on about how excited he was to never have to take another test again, that as a doctor his whole life had been a series of tests, and now that he was close to retirement he would no longer have to. The rest of our appointment went on like this while I sat there… dumbfounded behind my face mask. He then told me the appointment was over and that I would probably be ok, but that once I'm unable to walk due to my spine worsening then I could come in to see him for surgery. I told him that didn't sound good at all especially since he was retiring and he told me not to worry, pushing me out the door while adding once more, come and see me when you cant walk. I'm 27 years old. I was hoping for a little advice on how to relieve pain, maybe how to slow the progression of my spine worsening, whether physical therapy was an option, the benefit of chiropractic work in my scenario or even if there were any exercises I could perform myself. Instead, I got, "you're fine, come and see me when you cant walk." and "Your pregnant wife is responsible for the delta variant due to her irresponsibility to get vaccinated" and "Oh poor me and my life of tests, retirement, retirement, retirement." It was the worst appointment of my life, I really don't appreciate having my time so utterly wasted. I've now had to wait an additional two months with constant pain in my back, so nearly half a year now, just to get some advice on what to do. My next appointment with what I assume is a competent doctor is later this week. I cant imagine it will go as badly as this nightmare of an experience. Get it together Kaiser.

MENTAL...worst experience of my life as far as a medical dr

He comes to Hilo from Aiea to cherry pick patients. Check him for yourself. His bad reviews are being polite. I thought I could handle him since I so needed surgery and I am in Kona. Left my house in pitch dark hopeful for anything, Dr. Kaan over 3 hours past my appt. He floats in all fresh and ready to demean. It was the ugliest violation of my pride and self. The only promotion he has is a sew on marine badge, sown down to thin air.

I'm relieved that the scoliosis surgery is now behind me and I was able to overcome the obstacles during surgery. I continue to pray for a complete recovery and successful fusion of my spine. THANK YOU for being a caring, diligent doctor throughout my "scoliosis journey". I thank god for providing me with such a skilled surgeon. I am very pleased with the results of the surgery and my family and friends are just amazed at the my new physique. Good health for you and your family .

I would like to thank him for taking such great care of me. I really appreciate all his efforts, wisdom, and expertise. Dr. Kaan is amazing! First, to even accept me as his patient even though another doctor did my fusions was a shocker because I thought no other doctor would ever touch me. Then for Dr. Kaan to actually listen a follow through with all my concerns was special and really made me feel like a rock star! I thought my other doctors were good but Dr. Kaan stands out. I felt like royalty. I am walking straighter and feeling less pain. Doing everything I can to make this surgery my last. He is simply amazing, words cannot express my true utmost appreciation! Dr. Kaan... Thank you and your girls in office who are so helpful and supportive to you and your patients.

Waste of time this doctor

I felt like he just wanted me to get out of his office before I even sat down. He must know his stuff, perhaps I caught him on a bad day....he kept interrupting me and speaking really fast, like trying to move it along. I felt unwelcome. And sad because my back has been hurting and I was really really looking forward to this visit. He just recommended physical therapy, but I tried that three times! He didn't listen to anything I said.
