Dr. Kent Lee Reifschneider, MD

My 14 yr old son was seen by Dr Reifschneider in 2012. Very little testing was done and my son was severely fat shamed- he left in tears and refused to see a doctor for three years. It was a truly awful, scaring experience — one I will never forget. But after the appt and labs I had assumed that endocrine issues had been ruled out. I now have the records from that appt and I see that my son’s thyroid tested out of range and I was never told. My son’s endocrine issues continued to worsen and in 2018 he was seen by doctors at the NIH and diagnosed with a rare hypothalamic disorder. He needs life long pituitary hormone replacement. This should have been caught in 2012. Years of my son’s life were lost without treatment. I can only imagine how his adolescent could have been if he had been diagnosed correctly. I’m sure good doctors can miss things, but if my son had been treated with empathy and respect we could have avoided the three years of medical trauma that occurred… because of the fat-shaming and I might have been able to get him to go back to a doctor sooner! Please avoid this doctor.

I've been taking my child to see Dr. Reifschneider for about 6 years or so. Even though he is an alright doctor as far as personality and work ethic goes; he doesn't have a filter...meaning...'says whatever he wants without thinking first' He pretty much called me and my mother fat and said the reason why my child was overweight was because we are lazy and don't exercise. He also told us to not have any computers nor TV's in the house! really?! Reifschneider is a bit rude in my opinion but I knew how to handle him. This may not be good for any other patients or 'parents of the patient' some people may take offense to some of the things he says out of his mouth.

he doesn’t know how to handle teenage girls going through puberty. i’m convinced he doesn’t understand that puberty changed the way insulin acts. and with that said, he handled my case very poorly. basically calling me fat and even felt the need to call CPS on my family because the numbers he gave me to work with weren’t working. Any other doctor would be better than this one.

Intense but very dedicated to care of my child

If I could give this doctor negative ratings I would. He told me not to give my 2 year old (seen for slow growth) water, only milk, and if he was peeing more than 2 times a day, that we are giving him too much to drink. Without warning, he took my already crying child from my arms and carried him across the room to let him run back to me (screaming terrified), to see him run. After just hearing what my son has for breakfast, decided that the reason he's small is because of not getting enough calories. The only family history he took was mine and my husband's height.

This man is a credit to his profession. He truly is a caring and compassionate man, I know my Type 1 son is in goods hand with Dr. "R" in control!!

He is a wonderful doctor. Always there for my son and my family when we had questions about my son's thyroid cancer. Dr.Kent, will now and forever hold a special place in our hearts, for everything he did for our son. WE MISS YOU, Dr. Kent.
