Dr. Khai Ling Tan, MD

I had a great experience here at first, up until a few weeks before my third trimester. Looking back, I wish I had listened to my gut and switched OBs sooner. The Positive - The staff and especially the MA, Wendy, are amazing, she truly made me feel comfortable and cared for. - My OB was Dr. Tan. In the beginning, she seemed warm, inviting, and respectful of parents’ decisions. As a first-time mom, I felt confident with her guidance and support. Where Things Changed At 37 weeks, we went over my birth plan. I came prepared, open to her recommendations, and even made a couple of changes based on her advice. My plan clearly stated no cervical checks unless requested. Right after reviewing it, she performed a GBS swab, then went ahead and did a cervical check without explaining or asking. I only realized what had happened afterward when she told me I wasn’t dilated. When I brought it up, I was told by a supervisor that Dr. Tan claimed she didn’t perform a cervical check, until I… described exactly what she did, and the supervisor confirmed it was a cervical exam. That moment shattered my trust. With only three weeks until my due date, I felt stuck, switch doctors last minute, or stay with one I no longer trusted. I decided to stay, hoping it would lead to better communication moving forward. Delivery Experience The nurses were wonderful, so kind, supportive, and respectful. They truly carried me through my labor and postpartum experience. Unfortunately, my actual delivery with Dr. Tan was the complete opposite. - She came in around 12:45 a.m. with terrible bedside manner. I greeted her, but she barely acknowledged me. - When the nurse mentioned I wanted to push on my side (something we had discussed and I had researched to reduce tearing), Dr. Tan looked at the nurse and said, “Well, that’s not ideal but I guess we could try to make it work.” Then she turned to me, asked why, and when I explained I researched online that it prevented tearing, she rolled her eyes right in front of my husband and I to the nurse. Theresa, our amazing nurse, didn’t engage. - I felt pressured into delivering on my back, not because it was better for me, but because it was more convenient for her. - We requested to delay cord clamping until it turned white. She waited only a minute or two, told my husband to cut it, and when he asked her to wait longer, she acted annoyed before reluctantly agreeing saying she could wait a couple more minutes. - Finally, my plan to deliver the placenta naturally wasn’t honored. Despite stating I didn’t want cord traction, I watched her pull it out. Final Thoughts The most important part of my pregnancy, the delivery, was tainted by Dr. Tan’s attitude and disregard for my wishes. Meanwhile, the nurses during labor and postpartum were absolute angels who made me feel heard, supported, and helped me make educated decisions by informing me about things that needed adjusting. If you’re a first-time mom who values being informed, respected, and having your birth plan honored, I’d recommend finding another provider. I never imagined a medical professional would roll their eyes at me during one of the most vulnerable and important moments of my life.
