Dr. Kirkham Wood, MD

I saw Dr. Wood for scoliosis between the approximate ages of 8 and 20. I remember him being an exceptional doctor. I knew he was (and still is) a man of few words, but exceptionally knowledgeable. I was having massive hip pain in my late thirties, I went back to see him because the other doctors I saw were not effective. I moved from MN to CO and he is now at Stanford. Flying out was worth it to me. However, the office staff appeared to struggle with the fact that I was traveling to see him. I had to explain multiple times that I was a previous patient. He fused my sacroiliac joint fused. The process of finding out the joint process was methodical and well done. However, I am allergic to iodine and even though I had an allergy wrist strap, my surgical site was packed with iodine on a pad . The surgery did reduce the pain in my sacroiliac joint and it even went away for a bit. When I had a year follow up, my bone had not fused. The pain is returning. I asked to see what I should… do. I was told to find another doctor in Colorado. So I have started the whole cycle over again. I am rather frustrated because I feel like I'm back at square one with more hardware.

I was pleasantly surprised how nice Dr.Wood was when I met him since there were a few bad reviews. I’ve seen him twice and he was nice and thorough both times.

I saw Dr Wood due to pinched nerves in my lower back, causing pain down my leg, 3 months after a hip replacement. He was at my hip surgeon's office in Los Gatos a couple days a week, so I made the appointment with him - I love my hip surgeon, so I figured why not? His PA put incorrect information in the visit notes -- she made an addendum to it after I complained. He barely looked at my MRI & said that I first needed an epidural spinal injection because "this sometimes helps, but is also useful as a diagnostic tool". I don't know why I agreed to it. It was very painful and did nothing for my continued extreme pain down my leg. I made a follow-up appointment - but it was 4 weeks later! Once they caught sight of my complaint about misinformation in my file, I got a phone call to get me in the following week in Redwood City. The Resident who came in first seemed to have the same attitude as Dr Wood - kind of arrogant. He also put misinformation in the visit notes. Dr Wood then… came in. I asked him how large the cyst was at L5-S1 (the size was not noted in the MRI report). His response: "I don't know". I told him that I asked a doctor at the surgical facility how large it was & she took the time to pull up the MRI & did her best to measure it. So I asked him how a cyst approximately 1/4" in size can cause the amount of constant pain I was in. He had no answer for me. I told him I wanted him to explain everything noted on the MRI report, which he didn't. His answer to "fixing" my problem & getting rid of my pain is surgery. I do not feel comfortable enough with him, and actually do not like him at all, so he will NOT be cutting into me. I'm seeing another doctor next week, outside of the Stanford network, who I hope will show me some respect and treat me like a patient in pain searching for help, who will understand and help me without attitude. So, I will NEVER recommend Dr Wood to anyone.

Dr. Wood is a very detailed, extremely experienced physician and surgeon. He was able to correct a back condition that I had struggled with for over 3 years during which I saw reportedly excellent pain physicians and other back surgeons before finding him. Dr. Wood was the most knowledgeable, easy to communicate with and very detailed in explanations and his care. Somehow, "excellent" isn't a strong enough descriptive term. Within 2.5 months after having pins and rods inserted for scoliosis, I was able to resume my entire life prior to the back condition, including athletics.

He did extensive fusion for scoliosis - back to varsity training 4 months later. Zero discomfort after 6 months.

DR Wood did a 2 level fusion on me in May 2015 and everyhting went extremely well from initial vists to post surgery follow up. The entire staff is exceptional!
