Lauren Marie Penwell-Waines

Throughout my life I've loved stories - hearing them, telling them, learning all their twists and turns. Initially, my plan was to pursue a career in journalism to tell people's stories. Then I discovered clinical psychology, which allows me to hear people talk about their journeys and then guide them into creating future journeys that align with what's important to them. \n I specifically chose to work within a family medicine residency setting because I can help both patients and clinicians. Patients might need help with health and well-being goals, while I can guide physicians to improve behavioral healthcare and support the patient-provider team in working toward healthy behavior changes. I encourage everyone on a patient's care team to offer holistic, coordinated care, so the patient can see the most benefit. As part of our integrated approach to care, I work only with individuals who have a primary care provider in the Novant Health Family Medicine Residency Clinic. \n …Approaching medical providers can seem difficult, so I work to create a non-judgmental space where people can share their struggles and their hopes. I integrate evidence-based therapies to support both mental and physical well-being, and use a short-term focused approach to therapy that incorporates mindfulness strategies. I feel honored to help individuals build resilience and thrive in their everyday lives. \n My daughter keeps me busy and happy when I'm not at work. We especially enjoy making artwork together as well as going to art shows, fairs and events. I also like fitness, cooking (and eating!) and reading good books.
