Dr. Megan Mcgavern, DO

My husband's (who is a senior) scheduled appointment was rescheduled the evening before his appointment for him to see a nurse practioner instead of Dr. McGavern (who is his primary care provider) This has been going on since 2021. He hasn't seen her since 2021 due to the staff pushing him to see the nurse practioner. My husband made an appointment due to some medical issues they were aware of. He eventually went to ER that evening. Had they kept his appointment two weeks before, his medical issue could have been caught. This is called patient neglect.

She’s a b****. There’s no other word for it. No bedside manner whatsoever. She was obviously in a bad mood from the moment she walked in the door. Sullen, unsmiling, condescending, annoyed, unsympathetic. Did not perform any exam on me. Just went with my history and prescribed me medicine. I was one of her last patients of the day, so maybe she was in a hurry to go home. Being rude doesn’t mean she’s not a capable doctor. But I can tell you I will avoid her in the future.

A family member has been using this doctor for several years and upon going to an assisted living facility and needing orders for certain meds, she became completely useless. The office staff appears nice at first but they are just as useless. When someone needs a simple prescription and you have to call the doctor every day for a week, there’s a problem.

I personally have very bad experience with her. Like other people said she ALWAYS late. For my first time visit, she was late for 40 minutes. Then, their billing department always have problem. I went there for annual exam. And during the visit they told me they will ask some basic routine questions. She asked me if I everything is good, do I have any pain? I told her I have some pain on my chest. And she told me to use some tiger balm. I said okey. After several month, I got a bill for that visit. Since my insurance covers the preventative care. I emailed them and would like them to correct it. They reply me and saying since I discussed my condition with the doctor they charged me for a doctor visit. The original price is $110, with the insurance, the discount charge is $45. So, does that mean I should be just quite, and lying to the doctor when I do my annual exam? It is only $45, but I really tired of Dr. Mcgavern. And don't like the way she treat the patient. The only good thing… about that office is the front deck receptionist. She is nice and very knowledgeable.

We were among the first patients joining Dr. McGavern when she came to this practice. She has taken care of my mother, brother, husband, daughter and me! She is compassionate, caring, and listens to our concerns. She takes an interest in our family dynamics. My husband and I are planning to move out of state for about a year, but we will not be changing doctors. We will return to Newport News quarterly/semi annually to fulfill our appointments. We trust and believe in Dr. McGavern and when you feel that way about your doctor, you don't want to give them up.

She is cold and impersonal and is always late in seeing you although she wants $50.00 if you miss an appointment. She has a horrible bedside manner as he does not make any small talk or take the time to look at you and get to know you as a person. If you fall into the cookie cutter patient mode then she's fine with you otherwise she will catch an attitude. I don't think she is happy and it shows.

It's very difficult to find a good doctor when you move to another state. Dr. Megan Mcgavern is one of the best doctors I have had in many many years. She listens she cares and she takes her time with you no matter how busy she is. We are blessed to have found her. We love her dearly and who has ever said that about their doctor?? She is the best there is. Compassionate caring gentle and kind!!

Dr, Mcgavern can be very rude and arrogant. She failed to diagnose severe health problems my mother was experiencing, and became sullen and obnoxious when I inquired about the treatment being given by her. I would not recommend her period.

While Dr. McGavern seemed to know her field, I got the distinct feeling that my time was not valuable to her (I arrived 20 minutes early and sat in the back for an additional 15 minutes). There was nobody in the waiting room when I arrived and the front desk person was a temp hire for the day. When I met with Dr. McGavern she had a student following her and she talked down to me. I didn't feel that my concerns were addressed or taken seriously. I'm sorry, but even if I'd received top notch care, I don't have an hour to waste every time I have an appointment. I have to make a living too. I was very disappointed especially after seeing her commercial. Not what I was expecting at all.
