Maksim Korotun, DO

Maksim Korotun, DO, is the assistant medical director of the Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplantation Program at the Northwell Transplant Institute and an associate professor of medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Over more than four years with the program, he has been instrumental in its growth, helping to broaden access to advanced lung disease and transplant care across Northwell's western region. He has led the development of outreach clinics in Manhattan, Staten Island, and Chappaqua.Dr. Korotun's path to medicine was shaped by years of competitive golf, where he developed a mindset rooted in precision, adaptability and disciplined execution. Just as no two shots are ever the same, he approaches each patient encounter with an individualized strategy combining preparation, experience and real-time clinical judgment. This philosophy defines his practice in pulmonary and critical care medicine, particularly in the …complex field of transplantation.He completed his medical education at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and did a residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. He returned to New York for fellowship training at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where a mentor inspired his pursuit of pulmonary and critical care medicine. He advanced his expertise with an additional year of training in sleep medicine and joined Northwell as full-time faculty, drawn by its collaborative culture and commitment to patient-centered care.Dr. Korotun has extensive experience in point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS), which he integrates into daily clinical decision-making. A recognized leader in ultrasound education, he teaches nationally through the American College of Chest Physicians and has been honored with the Distinguished CHEST Educator Award in 2019 and 2020. His research interests include donor-recipient matching and post-transplant assessment of diaphragmatic function.At the core of Dr. Korotun's practice is a commitment not only to understanding complex medical conditions, but to ensuring that his patients understand them as well.
