Vitals.com is the forum I have for telling as many women as possible that the Board Certified OB/GYNs of Mercy actually allow residents(doctors in training) to perform complete surgical procedures on their purposely neglected to be told, totally unsuspecting, anesthetized patients. For your surgery it may only be part, but whichever is the case, if your Mercy doctor has not told you specifically what part of a procedure the resident is doing, then your doctor has perpetrated something called "ghost surgery". "Ghost surgery" is the act of substituting one surgeon for another surgeon, residents included, for any or part of a surgical procedure without the express consent of a patient who has essentially hired a specific doctor to treat them. "Ghost surgery" is considered fraud and battery of a patient (U.S. Supreme Court 1983). Something else to seriously consider is the risks/rates of complication definitely go up when residents are… involved. Perfectly logical really when you consider many aspects of a gyno procedure can be completely blind: critical bladder dissection, sling procedures, a d&c, etc. So, how on earth can your doctor supervise that? Mercy has these statistics. I believe they should give them to you; having a resident do any of your surgery is a risk just like any other; anesthesia problems, ureter damage, etc. My little bit of research also led me to the ugly discovery that residents will be allowed to perform an invasive bi-manual pelvic exam on you while you are in a lithotomy position and anesthetized. The Mercy doctors thinking is you will be perfectly relaxed and excellent practice for the residents. These pelvic exams without your express consent are against the law in 4 states. Hi for example found numerous instances bruised cervices, torn and abraded tissue, and countless cases of infection. While it is not against the law in Mo, I thought it was so grossly unethical I could scarcely believe it. Then there is #4 on your consent form. It is deliberately and purposely broad and vague. They don't want you to know. The Mercy doctors think it's okay to tell you a resident will be involved in your care, or maybe a resident will show up minutes before you surgery and say, "Hi, I'm the resident. Mercy doctors think this covers their responsibility to you. It doesn't. Hopefully, I have added some info and Good Luck with your decision.

Dr. Marcrander has delivered all three of my children; the first was born when she was a resident at St. John's. Her patients are her number one priority by day and her family is her number one priority when she is home. She is overall a wonderful person inside and out and her specialty of bringing new life into the world is exactly what she was meant to do and she does it well!

I have had two babies under Dr. Marcrander's care, and if I have any more children, I hope to have her as my doctor. She is superb!

I switched to Dr. Marcrander after a bad experience with another ob. She has made it possible for me to have two healthy children. She is always positive and has a terrific bedside manner. She is knowledgeable and explains all of my options, always letting me make the final decisions according to what I'm comfortable doing. She is very gentle and has never hurt me during exams. Her medical assistant is the only undesirable part of the office experience (mean, makes stupid mistakes that luckily I've caught). I would recommend Dr. Marcrander to anyone and am so grateful so practices in STL.

I switched to Dr. Marcrander several years ago while having some fertility issues. She diagnosed the problem and shortly after became pregnant. That was after having seen a fertility specialist. She was wonderful during the delivery and she makes me feel very comfortable during exams. It may take a while to get an appointment with her but it's well worth it.

I have no clue what the other gal is alluding to. Dr. M saw me immediately - though she thought it was for a second opinion only - & quickly diagnosed my problem. My successive visits were just as quick, & my surgery was a success. Further, she has been nothing but kind, considerate & caring. And I have had no issues whatsoever with my surgery. She has been outstanding in every way, & I couldn't be happier that she came back to STL. She is now my OBGYN of choice, having left my previous doc of 16 years to stay with her.

I'm glad she went back to St Louis. She delivered my child because my doctor had the day off. I never saw her again. She was always too busy. I think something went wrong because I have some problems now, but can't ask her because she's gone now.
