Dr. Maria Maida Andres Mercado, MD

I have been seeing Dr. Mercado for years now. I can't say enough great things about this physician! The amount of time, care that she spends with me at each visit is incredible! Always making sure I have all the supplies I need. Her team is on the ball, with getting PA done for needed medications. WOW~ is all I can say. We need more GREAT doctors like her.

She is rude and not willing to listen to common sense.

I have been trying for 10 years to get help with my weigh gain. I was a normal weight my whole life, but with menopause, I slowly gained 80 pounds over a 10 year period. I tried all the conventional and unconventional methods to manage my weight from Weight Watchers, Hcg with physician oversight, 1 year in the pool doing water aerobics, journaling every bite that went in my mouth and submitting it to my doctor who told me I was not eating enough, 1 year in the gym with a trainer working as hard as I could, 1 year eating a completely vegan diet cooking it at home and using the "Forks over Knives" cookbook and walking as much as I could while dealing with a broken foot that did not ever fully recover. I don't run to doctors first. I go there as a last resort. They are expensive and I don't make a huge income. I had been to see another endocrinologist and she did a lot of tests but I became frustrated with her because she lost test results, forgot appointments she had with me and did not… return calls for weeks on end. I decided I needed to find another one. I made an appointment to see Dr. Mercado and had to book weeks in advance. After waiting a long time to see her, she was unprepared, had not reviewed my records which had been sent to her, asked very few questions and quickly summed up my situation by saying, "I can't help you." She contradicted many of the conclusion of the previous endocrinologist with a condescending eye roll and pretty much made me feel very judged, and like my presence in her clinic was an annoyance. She said that she wished her patients were screened better so she didn't have to deal with people like me who, "...come in expecting a magic answer to their weight issues." By now I'm sobbing and asking her for help. I asked her what she would suggest and she said I could go to an obesity clinic, get lap band surgery or take medications that would put my health at risk. The purpose of losing weight is to get healthier, not take more drugs. I have never felt so awful in my life by the treatment of a physician. I would not recommend this woman to anyone. She is arrogant, impatient and unkind. She could have told me all the things she wanted me to know with a compassionate attitude of gentleness and kindness. Instead, her response, "I'm sorry ma'am. There's nothing I can do." Find someone else to see you. I don't recommend Dr. Mercado.

I have been Dr Mercado's patient for over five years and am very pleased with her. She worked with me to adjust my oral medications and insulin and monitored other health problems (heart failure, arthritis) while getting my diabetes under control. My A1C has been under 6.3 for over a year. Dr Mercado is very knowledgeable and pleasant. She makes sure I understand my lab reports and I have all my questions answered at each office visit. She always spends enough time with me and doesn't appear to rushing to see her next patient.

I saw Dr. Mercado today, and she was so horrible that I'm trying to get a refund. All she did was look at some bloodwork results sent over by my primary care doctor. She was cold and callous and had the worst bedside manner I have ever encountered. I had to wait 2 months for an appointment that lasted 5 minutes. Basically, she is awful - save yourself some frustration and find someone else.

I was very impressed with Dr. Mercado. She took time with me and was very thorough. She explained things to where I could understand and is a very caring doctor.

she has extreme anger which annihalates any reasonableness I am literally sick for two days after her destructive outbursts and her office helper is just protective of her job she has unrealistic expectations, a textbook doctor no reality of patient's side at first, I liked her faster, brusque ways, but as I struggled, she became a wicked dictator

After having a 4 year history with Dr. Mercado, I am finding a new doc. I found her attentive and compassionate for my first appointment, but has since been less than. She dismisses all my questions, in a manner that makes me feel stupid for asking. My last straw was when she completely dismissed my question about being a pump candidate. It was just a question for cripes sake, not to mention there's advertising all over her office about the pump, so you'd think she'd be open for a conversation. Her response was 'your insurance will never pay for it, so no, you're not a candidate'. I apparently missed the memo where I allow my insurance to rule over my health. I always find her nurses rude, I've been left in the waiting room for an hour before, and I'm patient, so I just waited. The nurse came to get me and instead of apologizing, she said "why didn't you tell the front desk you were still here?". I didn't know I had to. There are certainly countless other things that have added up… recently, but these are just an example. I feel like part of a herd when I go see any part of this group and have already began my search for a new doc.

This Doctor is an Internist, not a specialist in Endocrinology. Any primary care physician can order and review labs. Moreover, her bedside manner is POOR.I sought a referral from a Doctor known for his work with thyroid patients and am now getting the care I need. Dr. Mercado is not the Doctor for you if you need true Endocrinology/Metabolism advice and treatment.

This doctor is remarkably poor. I went to my appointment prepared with documentation of my meds, (previous/current) diagnosis, and symptoms. She refused to thoroughly read this page, but assumed I was there for reasons she projected onto me...weight issues. Because I could effectively point to hard data (bodymedia tracks energy expenditure; input caloric data)proving that I exercise twice daily (including martial arts)and have caloric deficits that do not equate to my weight loss to date, I made a point of telling her about the weight aspect of my symptoms. Yet, my list included migraines, aches/pains, etc. When the nurse called with labs, she read the doctor's note...none of my symptoms were addressed; except weight! Oh, and she tried to write off my hypothyroidism in the office, saying after babies we can usually take women off meds; I have a 9 year old and my levothyroxine dose has steadily increased since he was born. Well, I have Hashimoto's. She only noted it, but did not mention… what I know as issues people encounter with the disease. I can only suppose that she did not want me to recall her in-office comment, nor to be wrong. Further, my ferritin levels are low; these are strongly related to thyroid in my endocrine patients. Again, she skimmed the issue, noting that THAT is not why I cannot lose weight. Not that that could cause fatigue and irritability, as noted on my symptom list...! Her (and the nurse) bedside manner was less than favorable, and in truth, insulting.I would not advise a visit with this Doctor, unless you just need labs drawn. But then, your PC can likely do that...with kindness and effectiveness.
