Dr. Matthew Joseph Clayton, DO

Dr. Matthew Clayton is a coward. Our family had a decades-long relationship with the Clayton practice. I was a patient of the late Dr. Keith Clayton, and later my children were treated by Dr. Matthew Clayton. Dr. Clayton was kind to our children in the exam room, but kindness during appointments does not make up for failure to lead when his office mishandles billing and threatens a patient family with collections. For my son’s May 2025 visit, Village Green Pediatrics already had our correct Regence/Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance information and had already used it earlier in 2025. Yet the office billed insurance that should not have been treated as primary, allowed the matter to pass the timely-filing deadline, and then tried to make the balance our responsibility. The office manager, Susan Standefer, threatened collections. I contacted Regence/BCBS myself. The EOB stated “Timely Filing Period Exceeded” and “Amount you may owe: $0.00.” Regence later confirmed that after the office… finally submitted the needed paperwork, the claim was adjusted and we owe nothing. This was not a patient failure. It was an office billing failure. I called and wrote directly to Dr. Clayton and asked for contact from a decision-maker. Susan later confirmed that Dr. Clayton reviewed my letter and received my voicemail. He still did not contact me directly. Instead, communication continued through the same office manager whose conduct was the central concern. A pediatrician’s responsibility does not end at the exam room door. Billing, office management, patient communication, and accountability matter. Dr. Clayton had the opportunity to address a serious complaint from a longtime patient family and chose silence. After decades with this practice, we transferred our children’s records elsewhere.

He is the best doctor ever! He's always kind and understanding. He is very supportive. He is always great to fit me in at the last minute to see a sick child.

Dr Clayton is everything a ped should be: caring, compassionate, gentle, knowledgeable, patient and interested. I switched from Alpine Pediatrics which is a HUGE practice and the dr I had was great but there was still a feeling of being just a number. I love that the office is small and the Dr takes as much time as you need. Because of this, the wait time doesn't bother me. He always takes the time to ensure you have asked all of your questions and feel comfortable with whatever plan he suggests. Our 2nd son had to be hospitalized for 4 days when he was 7 weeks old. Dr. Clayton came EVERYDAY to update and check on us. Today, he called to check on us after being home for a week. He is just a jem! Get in if you can. I heard he changed his new patient policy so try and get in with your first child! :)

I love, love, love, Dr. Clayton, he is always so nice to me and my baby. He never seems to busy to answer any questions and is always positive. The nurses are so nice. My only problem is the front office girls, they are so rude, there is a fat one who does not smile ever, she never greets anyone she is horrible.(she purposely forgot to put my sons chart up for the doctor to see him)

I just switched to Dr Clayton due to being uncomfortable with a previous pediatrician. He is very kind and caring. He takes his time and answers questions without you feeling stupid, so different than the last Dr. He also takes his time to get to know you and your child. I agree with other posts, about making appointments. They seemed nice when I was there, but I have only gone once. The nurse was great too. The office is dated and needs a new paint job, but I didn't feel it was unclean.

Pros: Dr. Matthew Clayton is very knowledgeable and kind. My daughter hated going to the doctor with our old doctor. Now that we've switched to Dr. Clayton, she gets excited every time we go, she says that the doctor is nice.Dr. Matthew Clayton has personally called me to tell me results of my children or any added concerns he's had after we've left. He will also talk to you instead of a nurse if you ask for him. Of course, if he's with a patient, unless it's an emergency he can't just leave the patient he's helping to answer your phone call, but he Always calls me back then.The nursing staff is very kind and helpful. I was struggling with my daughter to take her to the bathroom while holding my baby and the nurses offered to hold my baby. They have offered every time. They talk very calmly and smile a lot. Very inviting.The waiting room is friendly and comfortable.Cons: The wait is sometimes very long. I guess that's normal for small practices, but it's worth it because of the… undivided attention/ service you receive. You never feel rushed while your child is being examined.Make sure to pay your co-pay before leaving. They don't always ask you, you have to take the initiative to make sure to pay. If you don't pay your co-pay, you do get a fee later. I don't remember how much, but it irritated me.All in all. Great Doctor. Great Staff. Great Medical Office.Highly Recommend. A+

I was very nervous to take my children to Matthew after seeing his father Keith Clayton for so long. However, Matthew met and exceeded my expectations. He was attentive, understanding, & compassionate. I felt he listened to all of my concerns as a mother & never once did I feel belittled by his answers. All my encounters with Dr. Clayton's staff have been pleasant. They are very friendly and professional. Also, my kids LOVE the train!

I really love Dr. Clayton! He is so nice and definitely genuine. We are changing pediatricians though, because of his staff. Every time I call I speak with someone who treats me like I am stupid! A specific experience: I discussed making an appointment for my 18 month old and my newborn. I was instructed to just call when the baby was born and make the appointment then. When I called, the woman I spoke with seemed impatient and short with me, and when I actually got there, she had only scheduled one of my boys. On top of that, it is very difficult to get an appointment on time, and the staff doesn't seem to be on the same page as Dr. Clayton. I had to schedule my sons 2 month appointment at 4 months, and when I told Dr. Clayton about it, he made time for us to come at 2 months. Why didn't he staff know that the timing was important. Lastly, the office is old. It doesn't have a clean/sterile feeling at all.

I found Matthew Clayton on Vitals. He's in private practice with his father, Keith Clayton, so be sure to specify which doc you're looking for. Matthew Clayton is VERY good. I was nervous, too -- I had a 4-week-old baby and had just moved here from California. Dr. Clayton is very gentle, and speaks softly to the baby. He's very respectful, and kind. Awesome bedside manner. He politely listened to all of my questions, and it really felt like he cared about my concerns, no matter how trivial. He made sure that I was feeling good about the visit before he left. I've taken my baby for checkups 4 times since then, and it's always been a positive, comforting experience. My questions are always answered. Recently, our baby had a horrible cough and congestion, and my husband and I were scared it was flu or something worse. We called and were told the doctor could see us in 30 minutes. We came straight to his office, he saw our baby almost immediately, and diagnosed him with a sinus infection.… Not only did he prescribe the right medicine, but he painstakingly explained every detail of the sickness, and how to administer the medicine in a way that was most comfortable for our baby. I really appreciated that. Our baby is better now -- we've been seeing the exact results that Dr. Clayton carefully explained to us. One thing that I have found difficult is the way the office works. Keith and Matthew have different staff at the front desk, and their staff only work the hours that the doctors themselves work. So often, I have called and been told that I will need to call back during the hours that the correct staff is in the office, which is a little bit frustrating. Other than that, though no complaints. And like I said before, even though scheduling routine appointments is sometimes a little inconvenient, when there is an urgent need to see the doctor, they will get you in as soon as possible, regardless of who is staffing the office at the time.I would recommend this doctor to ANYONE.
