Dr. Nathaniel Robert Piel, MD

Dr. Piel put my elderly mother with stroke history and blood pressure over 200systolic on the wrong medication and told her to just raise her legs. As she suffered severe unintended weight loss, he failed to do a proper work up for adult failure to thrive. Instead he let her suffer daily episodes of vomiting and refused to address her lack of appetite. If you do not know guidelines, standards of care, and evidence based medicine, you shouldn’t be practicing, let alone treating patients.

There seems to be a few people who have negative reviews due to where this doctor is from, rather than his medical expertise. I have found Dr. Piel to be kind, flexible (re-wrote many prescriptions per my request to fit with insurance), he was interested in me and my family and I felt like he addressed all of my concerns fully. I never felt rushed (despite signing off on an understanding before our meeting that the doctor may not have time to address all my concerns). I usually dread going to the doctor, I can get quite anxious. He really made me feel like I was receiving good care.

Dr. Nathaniel Piel has told me on more than one occasion that he's sorry that he moved to Knoxville, that his wife (also a doctor) wanted to move here, and that it was a mistake. It seems to me that Dr. Piel should focus on his patients and not himself.

Sometimes Dr. Nathaniel Piel has a student doctor shadowing him. On those occasions, he acts like a big shot, and I end up feeling humiliated, like a bug under glass.

I have been Dr Nathaniel Piel's patient for years. I have a very serious medical condition that I am trying to get help for. I just drove an hour and a half to my appointment in West Knoxville. Because the traffic on Interstate 40 was stopped for 30 minutes I was 23 minutes late for my 9:00 appointment. The receptionist personally asked Dr. Piel if I needed to reschedule or if he would see me. He said I had to reschedule without ever once considering my long drive or the circumstances surrounding my health condition. The receptionist told me I had to reschedule but I was shaking so hard and the verge of tears that I just left the office. I would not recommend Dr Piel or Faculty Internal Medicine. I was treated carelessly and felt humiliated. There were only about 3 or 4 people in the waiting room. I didn't know there was a 15 min. rule about being late for appointments. In the last year I have tried to see Dr. Piel and have had to see a nurse practitioner 3X . I was hurt to be treated… this way by a doctor that I had trusted many times before. I will be searching for another doctor immediately

Dr. Piel is easy to talk to and knowledgeable. He was referred to me by a friend. She is very happy with his care also. I would recommend him without hesitation.

Dr. Piel was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and doesn't understand patients who haven't lived lives of great privilege.
