Dr. Neil Ian Steinberg, MD

In my initial visit I talked about several traumatic things, including a miscarriage and about how I didn't know if I would want to try again with my husband. We moved on from the topic and into medications I've tried and he asked if I was considering getting pregnant again (which I expected to be asked since some meds I can't be on if pregnant). After I told him I really didn't want to have kids at the moment he went on a 12min tirade about how I should (I timed him because I was speechless). 'You need to leave behind a legacy'. 'Who's going to take care of you when you're older?' 'The world's population is significantly decreasing and we as a society should be fixing that problem.' It's disgusting to be lectured in general, but especially when I was still having feelings from losing a child. I saw him for another 2 visits to which he had asked about it again. I won't be seeing him again.

Don't buy into any other negative reviews that are listed on this site. Dr. Steinberg is great! It's very difficult to find a provider who is able to think outside the box, provide flexible scheduling, and is highly attentive and professional in providing psychiatric care. I cannot recommend him enough. It's very difficult to find a good psychiatrist, much less one that you can actually get into. Often times, if I'm feeling symptomatic I can call Dr. Steinberg's office and they'll see me later that week. That almost never happens anywhere else. Also, Dr. Steinberg's appointments are (sometimes much) longer than 15 minutes. He gives you the time of day and really listens to you. The only downfall of that is sometimes the wait times can be up to a half hour because he will spend extra time with patients who need care.

I have been managing my bipolar disorder for years now. I honestly think That I would not be hear today without the help of Dr Steinberg. He has always treated me kindly and genuinely cares for his patients’s well being. I also like his approach to medication. He isn’t going to prescribe twenty different medications. Some psychiatrists prescribe way too many drugs, leaving the patient over medicated. I consider Dr. Steinberg one of the best in his field.

I have been with Dr. Steinberg since 2006, back when his practice was in Independence. I know drive 45 minutes to an hour (depending on traffic) to see him since his office moved to Beachwood. I say this because he is the type of doctor that is worth the drive. Great doctors are hard to find! Dr. Steinberg treats his clients like people and not a number on a chart. He is empathetic and kind. I trust him completely, he is honest with his clients even if it’s not want they want to hear...a great doctor is honest and won’t just say what you want to hear. A person cannot heal without honesty. His ability to be honest with his clients in a way that is kind and sincere is exactly what those with trauma or struggles need during the therapeutic process. I have referred numerous people to him and I will continue to as I know first hand as a client that has been with him for over 12 years.

A Psychiatrist should be a gentle, understanding person. Dr. Steinberg is none of this things, unfortunately. At our first session, he would often get flustered when I said what medications I had tried before, and he constantly would say things like "Why would you take that" or "What doctor prescribed THAT?". He seems to have strong personal beliefs on certain medications, which I understand, but he is not kind in telling you. I left the office very unsettled, and felt bad. Needless to say, I won't return :(

Bring your own education and confidence to your appointments and do not believe that his is the only or best perspective out there on medications. Trust your feelings and your abilities and take what he says with many many many grains of salt. Shop around if you don't leave your appointment feeling reassured, helped and recognized.

while i am sure he is bright, he completely fails in people skills and empathy. when i met him and went over my medical history, he seemed more concerned about trash talking my past providers for their (in his opinion) dumb choices. i don't see why he needs to put down other doctors, especially when those doctors helped me, and the medication they gave me works. my insurance changed and i needed a new doctor, i just wanted someone to monitor my well-being while i continued my regiment. dr steinberg seems to want to completely re-do my medications. not because they're causing issues, but simply because he "knows better" than other doctors (his words, certainly not mine) and his ego dictates that he has to one-up everyone. changing medications for reasons like this is DANGEROUS. do not see him, mental health medications are delicate and should not be changed suddenly on a whim, like this doctor wants to.

By far the worst mental health provider I have ever seen. In our first appointment, all he did was rant about how "dumb" my old doctor was for putting me on the medications that I am on. What's funny is the seven other doctors I've seen over the last 15 years have never once raised issue with my medications. But Dr. Steinberg was intent on letting me know that other doctors have no clue what their doing, and that he always has to "clean up the mess they make". He didn't ask how I felt once. A good Psychiatrist should be empathetic and work according to what helps the patient. Dr. Steinberg seems more interested in insulting other doctors and doing things "his way". Every one responds differently to medications and has different needs, but Dr. Steinberg just wants to push his one size fits all agenda. My current medications have been working for me for over a decade, why try to change what works?

I have been seeing Dr. Steinberg for 18 months. Common-sense approach. Keeps costs low, very pragmatic in his approach. Helped me through a bad situation. Much thanks and respect to him for all of his help.

Dr. Steinberg is a very evil person he is a ego driven doctor out to make money and force you to take ant med he wants he has no feelings and acts like a sociopath .i think he should be investigated and put in prison for his lousy work. he was also licking his lips the whole time i was in his office like some kind of animal he was very scary and also wanted to sell me some kind of light that was like 5 thousand dollars i told him no and he keep pushing it he seemed to want to make money on the side.this guy is a qwak!

Talked to me in a rude, condescending, and often mean way. Said he would call in RXs, then changed RXs without telling me. When I called to ask why, he refused to return phone calls. (This happened twice.) He got openly hostile when I said I wanted my spouse to sit in on the sessions. I cannot say enough about how unsafe and harmful he is. Stay away.

First thing this guy was late all the time at least 30 minutes.the women at the desk was very nasty and rude about it.also the doctor just was very odd the way he acted.and seemed not to care about me at all he looked down on me.so i quit going to him he's a rude snot.

He challenged every diagnosis and every med I was on. Was actually cruel about it. Like I was stupid as was every doctor before him. I cried at the end of session not knowing what to do as the Pdoc I admired is no longer available. Seriously, in 10 minutes you know that much?

this guy is not very nice and like to yell a lot he is late all he time I went to him 3 times never went back and he likes to give pills out you don't need .
