I’m so very thankful for Dr. Patel & his team without them I wouldn’t be here today…on August 1, 2017 - 8 years ago I woke up not feeling well passed out & got transported to a local hospital & from there was sent to Boston Brigham & Women’s Hospital were my husband was met by Dr Patel & team…I had surgery on 3 aneurysms & recovered in the hospital for 21 days. I recovered at home for 5 weeks & returned to work what a miracle I am so very blessed and thankful. The entire staff was excellent & Dr. Patel is one of a kind, he takes the time to explain & listen to you & is also the nicest doctor I’ve ever met. So today when I had my appointment 10/16/2025 he gave me the best news I could’ve ever heard after reviewing my CT scan that my 3 aneurysms looked great & no signs of any other ones! Also the best part that I had graduated I no longer have to go back or be worried about anything. I have to say that was the best nights sleep I’ve had in the last 8 years! After many years of dealing with the pain caused by Trigeminal Neuralgia I had to make the choice of MVD surgery. After reviewing a few doctors based upon other recommendations it was an easy choice to select Dr. Patel to perform this surgery back in November. His compassion and caring for all my questions and his clear understanding of how he was going to fix the situation made my selection that much easier versus other doctors. At 22, I found out I had a grade 2/3 left temporal lobe AVM. I decided to not do anything at the time due to the high risk of surgery. At 40, I reached out to several neurosurgeons across the country to get several opinions on how they would approach removing this avm. After speaking with several, I decided to have Dr. Nirav Patel do my surgery. Dr.Patel is a highly skilled neurosurgeon, especially when it comes to AVMs. On May 15th 2023, I had my AVM removed. If you ever find yourself “shopping” for a brain surgeon, chances are you won’t have the luxury of time. Unlike, say, buying a car, there’s no showroom, no haggling, and certainly no chance for a test drive. My wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor that required immediate surgery. With the clock ticking and our stress levels soaring, prompt decisions about her care had to be made. Fortunately, a relative is employed at a large health insurance company; not only that, but, amazingly and serendipitously, she works in its doctor credentialing unit. She immediately started researching brain surgeons at Boston’s most prestigious hospitals, and she identified a neurosurgeon who consistently ranked among the best of the best: Nirav Patel, MD at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Dr. Patel pulls no punches. He described my wife’s tumor as a “monster” (an accurate-if-unsettling description of a 9 cm. frontal lobe meningioma) and said he had but one goal: to save her life. But, in fact, he did so… much more. The surgery took six hours and my wife came out bruised, battered, and nearly comatose. But during her 32 days in the Brigham, she received amazing care and her recovery exceeded expectations. Through Dr. Patel’s skillful surgery, the tumor was excised with little damage to the adjacent brain tissue, and in the ensuring six months, after speech, occupational, and physical therapy, my wife has returned to a near-normal life. We owe this outcome to Dr. Patel and his team. We are not, of course, fully out of the woods. Recurrences and other setbacks remain a possibility. But the Brigham neuro team stands at the ready. As Dr. Patel told us shortly after the surgery, he and my wife will be “friends for life.” If you or a loved one find yourself shopping for a brain surgeon, this is a friendship we highly and unequivocally recommend.

In addition to being a gifted and highly skilled neurosurgeon, Dr. Patel is one of the most responsive, “present” and kind individuals one could ever encounter. Dr. Patel’s entire team is likewise outstanding across the board — fellows, residents, PAs, office staff, patient advocate. In short, Dr. Patel is more than “just” a surgeon — he is a true physician (and a really nice guy) who cares for the whole patient, and the patient’s family.

Dr. Patel is a gifted surgeon. I had to have unexpected emergency brain surgery after finding out that I had an AVM in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was in a Zoom meeting with Dr. Patel the day after I found about the AVM and scheduled my brain surgery for the following week. The surgery was quick, easy, and basically painless. Dr. Patel and his staff made me feel comfortable and safe and I had an amazingly quick recovery- I returned to teaching full time 6 weeks later. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Patel.
