I recently had cataract surgery. After consulting with Dr. Schein, I decided to have the multifocal lens implants. I was told by my him that insurance will cover everything BUT the cost of the multifocal lens. Insurance only deems a monofocal lens as medically necessary so if you choose the multifocal, you pay for it out of pocket Please be advised that this is NOT completely true. I paid $3250 per eye for the lens (I have a document from Wilmer that states this is the lens cost). I later discovered that the lens cost per eye is only $1250. The other $2000 per eye is additional dollars the doctor receives for his services. So, he was paid for his services by the insurance and then again by me. When I brought this to the attention of Dr. Schein, he was surprised and indicated these dollars did not come to him. He said the only thing that i should have paid for was the actual cost of the lens. Wilmer Billing contradicted this and reiterated the $4000 dollars did go to him for his… services and he was just not aware of this. Really Wilmer! Transparency is what I should have gotten upfront. It was disheartening to learn, especially after encountering difficulty with the multifocal lens (that is another review entirely), that I was misled on the actual cost of the lens. While having this information upfront may not have changed my choice, as a consumer, it was information I deserved to have.

As an MS RN with decades of clinical experience, I had the good fortune of being referred to Dr. Schein for an inherited eye condition that complicates cataract surgery. Dr. Schein is not only an excellent surgeon but I found him to be patient oriented and a true comfort in knowing my eyes were in the hands of a competent, caring surgeon. I could not have asked for better. Thank you Dr. Schein.
