I've never written a "review" of anything or anyone until today. We just walked in from a long but amazing day at Texas Children's, and I couldn't wait to express my gratitude. Not sure if this is even the right place to post, so hopefully it is. I want any other mom or dad looking for a plastic surgeon for their child, to hear about our amazing experience. This is what I was looking to hear when I was researching plastic surgeons to remove a cyst from our 14 year old son's face. I wanted to hear someone else's positive experience with a surgeon, and the details of what set that surgeon apart from others.
We are from Norman Oklahoma. We heard through a pediatric dermatologist back home, that Texas Children's Hospital is a top 5 hospital in the country, and their doctors have the highest credentials in pediatric medicine anywhere. When our Oklahoma dermatologist told us that the cyst on our sons face needed to be removed, we panicked. He assured us the cyst was benign,… which was of course a sigh of relief to hear. But we were also prepared that removing a cyst on his face would leave a scar. A scar anywhere but his face would have been totally fine, but the face had us sweating a bit. The cyst was about the size of a grape between his cheek and his nose. It had grown quickly from a very small cyst that our dr. thought would go away, to a surgical situation. We consulted with a surgeon in Oklahoma that prepared us for a large scar. Then I heard about the plastic surgery team at Texas Children's. I got on their website determined to research each one of their surgeon's medical school credentials to find the one that looked the most qualified. I decided since Texas Children's was in fact named a top 5 hospital in the US for many years, their doctors had to be the biggest part of that. All of their profiles looked amazing, but Dr. O's was just over the top. Harvard undergrad, Stanford Medical School, NYU residency. All of these are top tier schools obviously, but I had no idea just how much that mattered until TODAY.
I called Dr. Olorunippa's office after deciding his bio on the Texas Children's webpage was the most impressive (how else does a mom decide who will cut on her son's face?:). His nurse scheduler Jeanette was AMAZING! No, really. AMAZING. She fit us in Dr. O's full surgery schedule, and worked all kinds of miracles to make it happen. THEN, she arranged a phone call with Dr. O himself the next day. He reviewed our son's medical records and the photos we took of his facial cyst, and then discussed the ways he would remove it with the least amount of scarring. He said he might even be able to make a small incision in the smile line, and pull the cyst out from there without leaving a scar on the more visible surface of his cheek where the cyst was. I was blown away, because the Oklahoma surgeon we had already consulted with, said this would be impossible.
We arrived today for surgery,. The experience could not have gone any better. The care from this hospital is second to NONE. We've never been to a children's specialty hospital, and had no idea what to expect. From the minute you walk in, this place is different. Beautiful, peaceful, smiling helpful faces everywhere. And then we met Dr. O in person. WOW! How can a doctor with these kind of credentials, have such a great bedside manner too? He is the most personable, funny, confident, and caring doctor we have ever encountered. He confidently marked a line on our son's face to show where he would be removing the cyst, in his smile line. He told us to expect great results, which was another thing we hadn't heard from the Oklahoma surgeon.
Boy did he deliver. He was able to make an incision in the smile line, and get out the entire cyst through that incision. And he called me right after the procedure to tell me how great it went. Everyone had told me this guy was amazing, from the nurses to the anesthesiologists. I even saw his picture in the hospital lobby, posted on an award for star doctors....no wonder! All the praise is well deserved. Our son was SOOOO happy that he won't have to start highschool with a big ugly scar on his face. We are so happy we did our research and went with the best. Our insurance paid the same amount they would have paid for a lesser qualified surgeon. Bottom line is I'm choosing the Ivy League doctor when it comes to a child's pediatric plastic surgery. It matters. The incision site looks amazing, with a tiny little bandage. Stitches come out in less than a week, and our son will be in highschool minus a grape sized cyst on his face. Clearly I can't say enough here, but how do you express how amazing it is to see someone save your child from a big scar on their face? He saved our son's confidence, and did it with ease. I would refer anyone and everyone to this doctor, and his entire medical team. Jeanette his nurse and surgery scheduler, came and found us in the cafeteria just so she could meet us in person. She and another amazing nurse even walked out to the front of the building with us, to take a picture with our son. The doctor also came in and took pictures with him before his surgery. Absolutely precious experience that thrilled us and our son beyond words!!
