Dr. Peter John Brooks

I had a BHR hip replacement with adult reconstruction expert Dr. Brooks in 2014. It's now 2023, almost 2024 and I have had no complications and it's still going strong. I'm able to lead a normal life. Before, I would not have been able to walk through an airport. Now I visit my daughter in Europe whenever I have the time. He is a master at his craft. He may be pressed for time, but that is because he is trying to help as many people as possible. Whenever I had a question (even years later) I have emailed him and he replied. I also had my knee done later that year in 2014. I've had no issues. I'm going to seek him out again when my other knee needs replacement. I will not go to another surgeon. Oh - I'm significantly overweight and did not have any issues with either surgery. I've noticed that some surgeons try to "select" ideal physical specimens to operate on, who have no health problems or issues (in medical terms this is referred to as "patient selection"). Dr. Brooks… does not discriminate against people who are overweight. He tries to help everyone. Some people may not be good candidates for BHR and if that is the case, he will tell you that. Had a hip replacement in 2013 and was very happy. In 2014 was in Florida and had drainage from the surgical site. Went to dr there and he lanced it, gave me antibiotics and told me to go to my ortho surgeon. Made an appointment and saw Phil, the PA. He said I was fine. In 2015, surgical area was bright red. Once again, saw Phil and he said it wasn’t hip and to see my PCP. Saw her the next day and she said I had sepsis and to go to emergency room. I indeed had sepsis, my hip was infected and I was admitted. Ended up with an antibiotic spacer and several months of recovery. I’m not sure why Phil blew me off—if he had done xrays or had me see the dr, this might have been avoided.

After months of research I settled on Dr Brooks or Dr Gross in SC. We were closer to Cleveland and decided on a visit. My first visit was with the PA and staff. The Pa, Phillip, asked me several questions about my activity. He very engaging and offered his knowledge of the procedure in question. After a few hours of testing and x-rays it was confirmed that I needed a hip surgery. Phillip talked about the two options and assured me that I was a perfect candidate for the BHR surgery. We left feeling confident with his review and assured us that Brooks was the man to do it even though we didn’t meet him at the that time. As for the staff at Dr Brooks office, it was amazing. I was turned down my Insurance, UPMC, for over 6 months. It was a very frustrating ordeal knowing that one pays some much for good coverage and they just weren’t willing to help me. Dr Brooks staff fought for me and got approval. Day before surgery we arrive and go through the volley of tests. Dr… Brooks came in and spent an unrushed hour with us. I feel he would have stayed longer if we would have wanted to. He made us feel very confident in our choice. Day of surgery we arrive and were treated great all respect by a great staff. They made it a point to comfort and allow you a bit of dignity. Post op care was outstanding. Don’t wait to have this procedure done. I had very little discomfort after procedure and was off all pain MEDs with in 5 days. Simply put, it was very easy! 4 weeks post op and felling like a new man! Thanks, Dr Brooks and staff.

Dr. Brooks is very intelligent. Top of his specialty. Don't hope for him to spend time with you or talk with your family in person. Can't get a follow up appointment with him either. Better not have any complications after surgery that require immediate attention; you won't be able to get in to see the physician assistant for a minimum of 2 months. Plus (as stated by the office) you have to see the PA 3-4 times before they feel it warrants an visit with Brooks. Oh, and he is in surgery 5 days a week and only in the office 1 day a month. #patientsfirst #notatthisoffice

I am very fortunate to have underwent BHR surgery with the best, Dr. Peter Brooks. He has always been very willing to address any concerns and spent a considerable amount of time with me following the procedure. An excellent experience.

After original consultation was very happy because Dr. Brooks exuded such confidence and knowledge of my condition. On day of surgery (hip resurfacing), was very disappointed that I didn't speak to the doctor before or after surgery. When I finally met with him, 2 days post op, he was rather short, obviously he is in high demand and not having the time to consult with an anxious post op patient. In terms of skill, I would absolutely recommend him, just wish I would have received more personal attention from doctor Brooks.

Dr. Brooks has performed over 1,500 Birmingham Hip Resurfacings, and he is, by all accounts, very good at this procedure. My concerns are regarding the amount of time he spent with me (about 15 minutes before the surgery, one 5-minute bedside visit the day after the surgery, and he was not at the 6 week post-op visit at all, it was with his PA only). This facility appears to be a "factory", for lack of a better term, and the emphasis is on throughput. It can take 3 months to get an appointment or surgery scheduled, and I was disappointed that Dr. Brooks was not involved in my 6 week post-operative visit even though I flew in from 600+ miles away just for this visit. Dr. Brooks PA, Phil Golnick, was very hiurried and made it clear after 15 minutes that "my time was up" and he needed to get on to his next appointment. Finally, the Euclid Hospital nursing staff leaves a lot to be desired and was very average, at best.
