Dr. Peter Andreas Netland, MD

Beginning in 2018, both of my eyes were treated by a macular degeneration (AMD) specialist with monthly Eylea injections. In the summer of 2021, Dr. Peter Netland, UVA eye specialist, joined my eye care team to treat my glaucoma disease in both eyes. Particularly, Dr. Netland was brought in to assess the possibility of recommended laser surgery to lower the intraocular pressure (IOP) occurring with Eylea injections. When I first met with Dr. Netland in June 2021, IOP in both eyes were at acceptable levels of less than 15. Then in the Fall of 2021, my left eye Eylea injection caused my IOP to spike to 54 which subsequently declined to 24 through eye drops treatment. My AMD specialist immediately communicated these high IOP levels to Dr. Netland as a “five alarm fire” which could result in permanent damage. However, Dr. Netland was not responsive to him and not available for an appointment until more than a month later in late November, 2021. At that appointment to treat this severe… glaucoma progression in my left eye, Dr. Netland recommended a different alternative, a Xen stent procedure instead of the less invasive option using a laser to lower the pressure. The very invasive stent procedure was not performed until six weeks later on January 5, 2022. During the procedure, the IOP dropped too rapidly to a level of 3, resulting in extreme impairment of the left eye optic nerve which is crucial to core vision. After the procedure, my left eye vision became 20/400, resulting in my no longer having the ability to read or recognize faces. After this horrible decline in my vision, I changed my eye care to Duke Eye Center, which confirmed the irreversible impairment of the optic nerve in my left eye. Currently, my local specialist team treating my AMD/Glaucoma diseases in both eyes have found the left eye extremely difficult to treat as a result of the irreversible optic nerve impairment.

I was told by the, I presume, a doctor that I was a candidate for the laser procedure to allow my eye to drain better. That was really what I wanted out of this appointment as the medications were hurting my eyes and eyesight. I was told I would be contacted to schedule the procedure.
