Dr. Peter Changhag Shin, MD

I have pins and plates with fusion of C3-C6. Had a great surgeon. After a subsequent accident, I was re-injured and in intense pain. I took my MRI to UNMH and got an appt with Shin 4.5 months out! At the first appt, saw a PA because Shin was in surgery. She couldn't review my MRI because she did not have the training to do so. Rescheduled, another 4 months passed with terrifying pain. Finally, the day arrived. Again, a different PA listened for 3 minutes. He left to consult Shin (who didn't bother to see me). I was told I needed a CAT scan and several X-Rays before he would see me. It had been 15 months since the incident, 2 PAs that could do nothing, no face time with Shin and given another appointment 5 months out. The pain has not relented. I decided to start over from scratch with a new doctor. Figure I have better odds of finding at least a mediocre doctor and will not risk a spine injury on Shin.

Peter Shin is one of the rudest persons I have ever met, and certainly the rudest doctor. He started out yelling at me for not having an MRI that no one ever told me or my primary doctor I needed before I could see him. He refused to provide any care or suggestions despite the extreme pain I was having. He then stated he had to go to surgery and walked out, leaving me in pain and in tears. Further, he then falsified my medical record by including "results" of a physical exam he never conducted. He never got within 6 feet of me, and could not have done the physical tests he put into my medical record. When I asked his assistant for a different doctor, I was told that Dr. Shin did not allow that . I had to go through the Patient Advocate Office at the hospital to get a different doctor.

Worse doctor ever. Rude didn’t care. 30 second visit. Poor communication skills.

Dr. Shin is one of THE BEST PHYSICIANS I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He operated on me to spare me from quadriplegia and paraplegia. By God's Grace, Dr. Shin helped save my life. My wound healed perfectly and my aftercare continues to be outstanding. Dr. Shin and his Team are compassionate, kind and always there to help. I have a second chance at life because of his care!

I’m 72 years old had a emergency suergery with Dr Shin was in and out didn’t explain anything was rude when I tried asking questions maybe cuz of my age never have I met a dr that really doesn’t care about his patients I honestly don’t know where to report him or will.anything be done or am I wasting my time I’m gona try and make a few phone call put please if possible don’t go to this quak I’m really disappointed with u n m h this dr needs to go ASAP

I was referred to UNM Neurosurgery by my primary care Dr. who said without a doubt surgery would be a good option to alleviate my chronic, debilitating pain. Dr. Shin spent maybe 5 minutes with me. He treated me like I was a waste of his time. He has absolutely no compassion. No acknowledgement of the pain I am in. “No surgery for you ....your Dr. is wrong” was his message, and he stormed out. I wonder if he even looked at my MRI images? It happened so fast I am not even sure what really happened in that examination room.

He is a butcher he messed my wife up in 99 in Shreveport, La and hasn't been the same now she has to have another surgery this man Peter Shinn needs to be behind bars for what he has done to ppl

Worst experience I've ever had with a doctor. I was treated like trash.

In my surgical consult, Dr. Shin spoke with me for 15 minutes without the benefit of graphics, models, or reference to available scans to demonstrate what needed to be done, why specifically, and how it best could be done. His assessment was that my problem could be addressed through a small incision in my side and would likely have to be repeated in a few years. He presented no options to this minor surgery for pain reduction. I have just had a second surgical consult with another neurosurgeon. He spent an hour and one-half with me with the benefit of scans and models, giving me a full course to show me where my back is currently, what is continuing to go on and why, what would help it now from getting worse, how that could be accomplished, and everything that would be required for recovery. He also presented options in detail (with a model) should I prefer not to have the major surgery. I was left feeling Dr. Shin essentially "phoned-in" the surgical consult.

exchange, contacted the patient advocacy department of the hospital saying, "You should not have been treated that way. We do not just abandon out patients." Subsequently, his boss, Dr. Yonas, agreed that I should have had a referral if nothing else and took my case on himself. All thanks to him. I have learned that you really have to become your own advocate and speak up. Especially when you are treated like a distraction. Do not fill this guys pockets - shop around for a Surgeon who has a heart and truly cares about this patients.
