Dr. Pirouz Fakhraei, MD

I was scheduled to see Dr. Fakhraei as a follow up from the ER for nerve pain. He asked what medications I was taking for the condition and I told him 3 medications, one including Percocet that was prescribed by the ER doctor. I told him the medications were not working and the Percocet was the only thing giving me a few hours of relief, but I was still in excruciating pain. He was looking at the common treatment options for the condition and prescribed the first one and got up and said it would be ready in 5 minutes and was walking out. I asked him what the medication was and when he told me I said I could not take it as it interacted with a med I was currently taking. He then looked at my med list and prescribed me the second one on the list without telling me what it was. I asked what the medication was and he kept saying the name and I couldn’t understand what he was saying so I asked him what class the medication was in. He then got an aggressive attitude and put his hands on his… chest and loudly said “are you challenging me ma’am?” I began crying and said told him no, I just want to know what medication I’m taking before I go pick it up at the pharmacy. His attitude continued and he starting a spiel about the chemical make up of the drug which he knew I wouldn’t understand and still told me nothing about what type of drug it was. I then asked him if he could give me a printout if the drug information as I still didn’t even know what the name of it was. He went to print it out for me and got aggravated because of a printer error and started getting impatient because he didn’t want to do it in the first place. I told him I don’t need a printout if he just wants to read it to me so I understand. He started reading it and stopped mid sentence and shoved the computer screen over so I could look at it. I finally figured out what the medication was and I told him I had taken it before for an unrelated reason and I had to stop because it wasn’t tolerable. He then said “well you didn’t tell me that.” And I explained that I couldn’t have because I had no idea what it was called until I read it on the computer. He then prescribed me the third medication on the list, which was Lyrica and he again got up and said he sent it to the pharmacy and tried walking out again. I had stopped him because I had no idea what the medication was aside from seeing a commercial for it on TV. I knew it was relatively new so I asked him if there were any effects on the drug and he answered “short term no.” So I asked if that meant there were long term effects and he simply said yes. When I tried to go into further detail about these effects he became angry, stood up and told me that my visit was unproductive and I just wanted Percocet and left. I had never asked him once for Percocet. I had gotten a small supply at the ER five days before and had a five day supply refilled the day before, so I didn’t need anymore and didn’t mention it one time after asked me what I had been taking. I was shocked by his behavior and his accusation that I was shopping for opiates. I had never even had Percocet before my visit to the ER. I immediately complained to his supervisor about his conduct and I will be filing a formal complaint to Kaiser and the medical board. After my visit with him I had to see another doctor the same day who told me he shouldn’t have prescribed the first two medications due to the interactions with the medications I was taking. I was prescribed the Lyrica and was given an in depth description of how the medication works down to when it would be important to discontinue use. I have never been more dismissed and mistreated by a medical professional before seeing Dr. Fakhraei.
