At the appointment they asked me on the spot where I would want to go for labs followed by you likely won't need any. I took it as blood work I said a lab followed by I think that one is covered. She asked do you mean this lab which wasn't what I said I said I think so, I can check later. Thinking if I actually need labs I could double check with my insurance before going there because how in the world would I know off the top of my head what lab is in network? I would need to call my insurance and the lab to make sure they are in network and do the testing I needed. Nope, I guess they were asking where to send my pap smear. So they sent it to that lab and didn't even double check it was in-network. How would the patient know what lab processes pap smear samples and know what lab is in network of the top of their head? I confirmed with my insurance it is the responsibility of the Drs office to choose a lab and use one in-network. That's not the patient's job, I would have refused to… give answer until I double checked with insurance if I knew they were sending samples there and not just using it to refer me to if I needed blood work. So now I have a large bill to pay for a preventative care visit that should have been completely covered because the relied on me to do part of their job and did not make it clear what they were asking for. They then said it was my fault, I have to pay it, and asked me to update my lab. Literally any that is in network! Wouldn't that be obvious?
