Dr. Haroun earned his medical degree from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society for his academic achievements. Dr. Haroun is most proud of receiving the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award for humanism in medicine, based on his delivery of kind and compassionate medical care. As a medical student, Dr. Haroun was awarded a prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute scholarship for his research in gene regulation at The National Cancer Institute. This work has been published in the journal "Science."

Dr. Haroun earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University in the city of New York. He was elected to Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society and served as its President. He was also elected to Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical engineering honor society.

Dr. Haroun is widely published, having authored over 30 peer reviewed articles, book chapters and abstracts. Dr. Haroun's clinical and research interests have included; complex spine surgery, brain and spine tumors, Chiari malformations, radiosurgery, spinal cord stimulation, and peripheral nerve entrapment.

He is an active member of numerous professional societies, including: The American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, The North American Spine Society, and the Maryland Neurosurgical Society.
