Summary
Rick Gessner was born and raised in Raleigh. After earning his B.S. in Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill, he served as a U.S. Navy officer for four years. He then returned to Chapel Hill and received his M.D. in 1995 on a Navy scholarship. He completed residency training in pediatrics in Washington, D.C. at the National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1998 and achieved board certification in pediatrics. He completed his naval service with a four year tour at Naval Hospital in Charleston, S.C. While there, he was appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Medical University of S.C. and trained residents and nurse practitioners. His wife, Sarah, is also a pediatrician. They married in 1994 and have three children.
