Dr. Richard Todd Steffen, MD

Dr. Steffen performed partial knee replacement surgery on my knee in 2018. Despite my leg being obviously crooked afterwards and never really healing properly, he kept insisting it was straight, and "this happens sometimes, it's okay." The biggest issue is not that he made a mistake, the biggest issue is his not admitting there was a problem. I walked, exercised, and moved for a year on a crooked leg, damaging the soft tissues and never really able to stand properly, and developed many pains in other parts of my body as a result. After taking one look at my leg, my current surgeon not only recognized that there was a problem, he know exactly what had happened and how to fix it. I had to have a total knee replacement in May 2019. Now my leg and bone are straight and I'm healing properly.

My father had his hip replaced and now has drop foot which causing him to walk much worse then he did before and has to use a cane. Dr. Steffen advised not to worry it would get better just give it time. When we would question him about it he would get defense and just keep saying it would get better. That was 2 years ago and it is NOT better. I saw how many people he did surgery on the same day as my dad and it was crazy. He was basically rushing through the surgeries since he was back to back throughout the day. He had way too many people scheduled and didn't take his time. Sadly disappointed and angry that my Dad is now much worse off then before the surgery.

Bad!!! Now have drop foot.leg numb from knee down,must wear brace to keep from dragging foot.Been 2 years so it will never go away,Negligence in operation????.think twice before hip repl.Thought I could now do things I coundnt do before.Wrong!!!!

He is a very knowledgeable, but quick Surgeon when he talks with you Surgery procedures has been a breeze. Working with his staff on meds and call backs has been a bit of a problem.

I think it's rather obnoxious that someone feels they need to write 3 negative reviews as if someone can't read the first. Having received my knee 2 years ago I can attest with the fact I have had the exact opposite experiences. I am able to jog, play golf and even play tennis when my wife is up to it. What makes a good surgeon in my opinion is one with a incredibly low to 0% infection rate and one who contributes their expertise to local schools nearby as well as "The Spurs". He is a very busy surgeon and think you need to take that into account your far from the only patient he is helping and probably has to prioritize his schedule to help those in need most first. If I was a surgeon from the looks of it I probably wouldn't want to work with you so maybe it's best to look in the mirror before pointing fingers at a great surgeon.

I'm sure Dr. Steffen is a fine Dr. although so far all he has done is look at XRays and ordered a fresher MRI. After my last post here you are not going to believe what happened last night! Picking up from my last review (see below) where his office cancelled all three of my appointments the day or or the day before I was to see Dr. Steffen (many times waiting months). My last re-scheduled appointment last week Dr. Steffen ordered an MRI with STRIC down at the START building here in San Antonio. I drove into rush hour traffic, found the building on time and they asked me to strip, put me in a little holding room with some blue shorts on (that we all use). Nothing abnormal about that except an hour later, I'm still waiting in the cubicle feeling a little naked and wondering what is going on. I have great 100% insurance with Blue Cross, I call them and they say, no problems on the insurance side, you've met all your deductibles, we cover the MRI etc. Then she asks to talk to the… office person doing the MRI. I take the phone to her and they talk about it. Turns out Dr. Steffens Office did not AUTHORIZE there own request for an MRI! Someone at his office is severely dropping the ball and it is reflecting badly on Dr. Steffen. He needs to look at his staff and fix the problem. I have no idea if the cancelling my appointments are his staff or if Dr. Steffen has a fishing addiction, but something is not right with this office. It's not fair to those of us who spend thousands of dollars hoping for the health care we are paying for. I've call the office, all I got was a WOW and sorry and did you re-schedule. I did, wish me luck again tonight.

Starting to believe everyone that asked who my surgeon was.... and after hearing my answer.....they'd reply..."Well...you had the best" Considering that he is a doctor...it is very impressive on what a people person he is.. I'd recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Steffen was referred by another surgeon. I am very satisfied with Dr Steffen's overall professionalism. He replaced a complete knee and I had very little pain. I cannot thank the first doctor I went to enough for letting Dr Steffen do the surgery.

Dr. Steffen did a revision on a knee replacement I had done by another doctor. I really wish I went to him first. He is an excellent physician and did a great job with my knee. Sometimes it can be hard to get an appointment and sometimes is assistant is not very responsive when you have a problem, but I can not say anything bad about Dr. Steffen. He helped me get my life back!
