Dr. Ritu Verma, MD

My daughter was diagnosed by Dr Guandalini (founder and chief MD)at U of C Celiac center back in 2007. We loved him! Moved to Philadelphia and followed up with Dr. Verma at CHOP. She was extremely difficult to discuss issues with my daughter. She was dismissive and couldn’t care less about Dr. Guandalini’s notes and scope reports. Very shocked that she is now taken Dr. Guandalini’s position at University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center. I sincerely hope she adjusts her bedside manner because I would never expect a chief MD to act in such an arrogant manner. I never followed up with her and went with someone else. Good luck, University of Chicago.

She seems like a nice person person (as other reviews point out) and a good doctor. Our problem was that the treatment she had our child on was not working (G tube). We followed feeding instructions diligently and our child would vomit almost everynight from the feeding tube. We tried everything to fix the issue. We relayed our troubles to Dr. Verma. We were made to feel that it was our fault, that we were doing something wrong, that we were the only parents with a child having this problem. We really felt ostracized by a large portion of the staff over this. One of the kind nurses let us know that there were a few other parents having the same issue and that we were not alone with this problem (thank you kind nurse!). Long story short, we finally found someone in the department that would listen to us and think outside the box - they were able to perform a relatively simple test that showed that our child had a real structural issue that was causing the feeding problems. Nevermind the… insult to our intelligence, we are still a little miffed that CHOP missed something that seemed so obvious. She also refused to look at food sensitivities/allergies as a cause. We sought and found a great nutritionist outside of CHOP that helped us assess food sensitivities/allergies and plan meals. We were able to able to improve our child's health immensely just with this. If we could go back and do it all again, we would have seen the nutritionist only, never gone to CHOP and saved our child a lot of agony, and ourselves thousands and thousands of dollars in medical bills.

This doctor is caring and loves her job. She has diagnosed many children with celiac disease. If you are looking for a good pediactric gastroenterologist then you should go to Dr. Verma.

Dr. Verma is the greatest pediatric GI doc around. She is a phenomenal M.D. and genuinely cares about her paitients. If you have a kid with Celiac disease, this is the doctor for him/her. She is wonderful!
