Dr. Sajen John Mathews, MD

I saw Dr. Sajen for three different appointments. The first two were lovely, as I had been to multiple other GI doctors in this facility without anyone being able to diagnose my symptoms, which was severe nausea leading to vomiting and severe pain whenever I eat or drink. I was at the point where only cannabis could get me to eat anything. Dr. Sajen ordered two tests that no one else had tried to determine my digestive speed, checking for gastroparesis. One test showed positive and the other was semi-positive, and with that I was diagnosed by him with gastroparesis. The second appointment, he seemed to rush me through to tell me that I had a diagnosis and then rushed me out the door without a plan for treatment. When I came back to seek medication to ease my symptoms, I mentioned for the first time (I was newly diagnosed and just starting to tell my physicians about it) that I have an eating disorder, ARFID (it's rare and doesn't involve weight concerns or binging/purging, only the… fear dislike of the taste of most food). Upon hearing this, Dr. Sajen made a complete 180, telling me that I didn't have gastroparesis (which HE diagnosed from HIS tests) and that all of my symptoms (nausea and stabbing pain) are a result of my ED. I've had this ED since I was 4 but these symptoms are very new starting in 2016, 12 years after my ED began. He pushed me out of his office telling me there was nothing he could do for me, leaving me feeling hopeless. Eating disorder specialists can't handle my physical symptoms, and he refused to do so. After this, I felt invalidated and ignored. Do not recommend for any cases that are rare, difficult, or "abnormal".

Dr. Matthews is an extraordinary doctor. He is very detail oriented and explains things in a way that’s easy for the patient to understand. His staff is amazing and very compassionate as well. I am so blessed to have him as my doctor and would recommend him to anyone!

Dr. Mathews is the best doctor I've ever had. He took the time to take care of me. He had reviewed all my history, tests and scans before my appointment.

My entire family has GI conditions that need close follow up. Dr. Mathews has taken care of us for years. He is the best doctor that we have known. He is personable, caring and connects with patients.

I was truly impressed with the nice facility and the friendly staff . The doctor has a long waiting time to get an appointment because so many patients who want to see him. He is truly caring, professional and has a great send of humor.

Health concerns require me to have a Colonoscopy every year. For many years I have been going to a specialist on the West Side. I heard good things about Dr. Mathews, and thought I would try him, and be closer to home! From our first meeting to the procedure follow-up, it was the most special, easy, competent experience I have had in nearly 20 years. Thank you Dr. Mathews, and thank you to your staff and Knott Family Team. See you next year!!

I understanding an office being busy, but this is ridiculous. The office staff is not very friendly, and treats you like a number. Whenever you call for Dr. Matthews assistant it goes straight to voice mail. Unless you continue to call you don't get a response to your concerns. I have called for 2 days before getting a call back. Extreme lack of communication. No one seems to know what each other is doing. You have to continually repeat your concerns to several different people. Surgery staff is not very personable. I felt very uneasy from the start. My concerns still haven’t been addressed. It has been over a week. This is after going to the ER to confirm by suspicions. Not able to get a follow up appointment for a week after, even though it is a cause for concern. Dr. Matthews and his staff don’t seem very invested in their patients.

The best physician I have even been to . Compassionate and caring . He diagnosed my complex GI issue I have been have had for years and helped me with treatment . Has a great sense of humor and puts you at ease immediately.

He's an HMO guy need I say more

I was treated at St. Jude's E.R for severe stomach pain and vomitting with and without blood. The staff was very caring and gentle. I was admitted after a Labs and CT were performed. I was supposed to see Dr. Mathews before an EGD was performed. I didn't see him until I was in the procedure room and that was only to get consent and waivers out of the way about 2 minutes. The other 4 were when I woke up where he told me I had to see him in 8 weeks because my gallbladder had to be removed along with dilating my ulcerated esophagus , Shatzkis rings and he mentioned a hiatal hernia and 2ulcers. No bedside manner or time to explain My diagnosis or prognosis. I guess It was assumed that I had no questions or comments. I felt like I had gone thru a conveyer belt.
