Dr. Sharon Leigh Gardner, MD

The most caring and amazing doctor I've ever had to deal with.

My daughter was born with a tumor and was the youngest child receiving chemo at NYU Medical Center. It was a very difficult time but Dr. Gardner and her staff were caring and exhibited expert communication and compassion.

It's a select group that goes into pediatric oncology. As an adult who has had recurrent tumor that is almost exclusively found in children, I've met quite a few. While most are excellent, Dr. Gardner still manages to stand out. She was absolutely dedicated to my care. She has met me in the ER on weekends and chided me for not paging her in the middle of the night. She is there for you whenever you need her.Moreover, she is fierce in her determination to get the best outcomes possible. I called for an appointment on a Friday, met her on Monday after complaining that another institution was dragging its feet in getting me started on chemo, and she offered to start me that very Wednesday. She knows her stuff, and she's absolutely methodical about her care of patients. Nothing will fall through the cracks or get by her. The reality is that you may wait a while in the waiting room before seeing her. Get over it. There is an incredibly sick patient load and sometimes people need more time… than is scheduled for. The flip side, is you will get the time you need to get your questions answered. Also worth mentioning, is that the staff at Hassenfeld (the outpatient clinic) is just as great. The only downside is the staff at the hospital itself. I was an adult inpatient so I can't comment about the pediatric floors.
