Dr. Stephen Jeffrey Lurie, MD

I saw this person yesterday because I was pretty ill, just left work early and he was accepting walk-ins. Huge mistake! He walked into the room and the first thing he said was: “What do you want me to do for you today?” Sounding more like: Why did you come here? I’m my eyes. He did absolutely nothing for me and treated me like I was just trying to get out of work which is the exact opposite. I don’t need an excuse to leave work sick and didn’t need to go in. I wanted to make sure I would be good to go for my next shift. He prescribed nothing and only recommended “pain” medicine for my respiratory infection symptoms. On my chart, apparently that meant just take Tylenol. He even told me to stop taking the over the counter cold and flu medicine. 24 hours it has now moved to my ears and sinus. This guy is a complete joke.

Excellent doctor ! He really cares for his patients I Would highly recommend him !

Bilbo Baggins minus the personality. I am a very educated and proactive patient, personally monitor my own bloodwork and am an unashamed advocate of my personal health care. In my interactions with Dr. Lurie he proceeded to make personal moral judgments with regard to my use of Testosterone (prescribed by a Dr.)even though it was deemed medically necessary by prior physician. He denied my request for specific blood work that I wished performed to monitor personally because he did not write my prescription for the compound. His conduct is grossly in contrast to the Hippocratic Oath of beholding ethical standards and doing no harm. Therefor I switched to a new Dr within the same practice and Dr. Lurie continued to monitor my communication with regard to my health care without my permission. Even going so far as to respond to a message I left for my new physician. Pathetically unprofessional with the bedside manner of a corpse. I strongly discourage anyone from seeking care from… any of the Physicians located at Manhattan Square in Rochester. Even his published work was intermediate at best leaving much to be desired. There is a reason he is accepting new patients unlike the majority of Physicians in Rochester. I feel bad for those he shares the practiice with. My experience with UR Medical has been very positive for the most part with exception to Dr. Stephen Lurie. Steer clear!

Condescending and arrogant with his perceived power in his current position. I found his knowledge on many topics to be antiquated particularly with regard to the importance and function and regulation of the body's specific hormones. Refusal to do bloodwork relating to specific health related issues that I have been dealing with for years. Personality leaves much to be desired and appears disinterested, not engaged and for lack of a better word incompetent. Made many comments in my chart that were either untrue or based on his own moral judgement or lack of education on topic. Only reason I ended up in his office is because my Dr went out of practice and I needed a PCP. I do not recommend this office in general. Convenient location, incompetent care!

Doctor seemed disinterested and unmotivated. Had difficulty forming questions to ask me, then interrupted me in mid-response. His notes, which I can read online, had several inaccuracies. They were minor mistakes, but mistakes nonetheless. Fortunately, this was just a routine, meaningless checkup. I would hate to have to see this doctor for something serious.

Thank you for allowing me to share this. I had an easy time of it making the appointment and I went to the meeting with modest expectations - maybe even good ones given that Dr Lurie has advanced credentials in both medicine and psychology. I wasn't sure if he was the best fit for me but I was open minded about this encounter. As soon as he entered the room, I had the feeling that something was amiss. He struggled to make eye contact with me, opened with the awkward words "how can I help you?" which puzzled me, and deliberately evaded any questions that would allow me to get a better feel for him as a potential match for me. He repeatedly redirected the conversation to me in a manner I found unnerving. And he seemed anxious. Very, very anxious - maybe even a little depressed. After about 10 minutes I knew we were probably not a good match so I invited an open conversation about billing for this appt since I experienced something unexpected about this in the practice in the past. I have… since learned that UR medicine bills all first visits for adults as "establishing care" - a service that runs anywhere from $120 to $400 depending on the "complexity" of the case. This expense comes from a combo of "insurance" and out of pocket payment depending on a number of factors. So I could be looking at a bill of approximately $200 to $300 for this "MD visit." In order to get this information I needed to press people other than the doctor. He made the usual excuses to evade the subject by talking about the insurance companies and billing offices, with extra comments about his right to be paid for an appointment that he could have used to see someone else. I am happy to see the practice in place and wish them well as they grow and develop. I wish this man well too. But I am concerned for him, and I would be concerned for anyone who chooses to see him for medical care, if what I witnessed in my appointment is his baseline self presenting. He remains true to the info he gave about his approach to medicine on his internet bio, which is good in my opinion - but I must say, the man in the photo seems much more self assured and composed than the one I met in his office. I will pray for him, but I will not be seeing him again.

I experienced Dr. Lurie as very flat interpersonally, and found it difficult to discuss the issue for which I came. He seemed well-intentioned, but his suggestions weren't attuned to my particular situation, and I left feeling sad that I had taken time away from my office and family for something that made me feel exposed but not understood. I will definitely wait a few months to see my own physician next time.
