Dr. Stephen M. Spindel, MD

Stephen M. Spindel, MD, is an attending surgeon at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Spindel’s primary clinical focus is on the treatment of aortic valve pathology and diseases of the aorta, especially in patients 60 and under, where he performs the Ross procedure or valve-sparing aortic root operations. He also has an interest in mitral valve repair, mainly through a small three-inch incision. He remains an active heart and lung transplantation doctor and performs coronary artery bypass surgery.After obtaining his Bachelor of Science in cellular and molecular biology from Tulane University in 2008, Dr. Spindel earned his Doctor of Medicine at Louisiana State University School of Medicine of New Orleans in 2012. He completed his integrated cardiothoracic surgery residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2018, where he was Chief Resident in his final two years.Dr. Spindel’s research focus is aligned with his clinical interests, specifically concentrating on diseases of the …aortic valve and aorta. He has shared his work through numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations.Dr. Spindel served eight years in the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard, where he received a National Defense Service Medal, an Armed Forces Reserve Medal and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He also served in relief efforts for hurricanes Katrina and Gustav.
