Dr. Steven Marc Silverstein, MD

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Silverstein for years. We both had cataract removal. Dr. Silverstein, Dr. Lockhart, Dr. Khan and staff are phenomenal. Very nice people,Dr. Silverstein recently preformed a Yag procedure on me. I was 100 % successful. My vision was clear in a few minutes.

My wife lost 85% of her vision My 59 year old spouse lost 85% of her central vision in her right eye after cataract surgery with Dr. Silverstein. Prior to the surgery, she had never worn glasses and had no issues but she was told that she needed surgery. We now seriously question if the surgery was even needed? She was then pressured to get premium lenses and forcefully told by the lady who scheduled the surgery, "You are legally blind and shouldn't be driving!" This was a lie, with her vision at 20/50. On the day of surgery my wife told the staff there was a problem with her eye. The day after her surgery at the follow-up appointment and then at the follow-up meeting six days after surgery, my wife told Dr. Lookhart, the Optometrist assigned to do follow-up examinations, that her vision was "Wonky" and that something wasn't right. She could see and pass the vision test but something was impeding her vision. He told her in each case that this was normal and would improve. I have since… learned that this was anything but normal. They ran a test on depth perception and literally guided her hand to pass after 6 or 7 fails. On the evening one week after the surgery she noticed bands across her vision. She called on the next morning after losing more of her vision and was told to Immediately come to the office. She was tested and told that she had lost 85% of her vision in the eye and had suffered a "Ischemic Optic Neuropathy" and most likely the vision would not return. They referred her to a Neurologist and scheduled my wife for an appointment five days later. I said that was unacceptable and would serve as our own advocate. During this time, my wife was given two lectures as how they were not responsible for the vision loss as she was in tears. As we left, Dr. Lookhart said "Good Luck"! I was able to get into the same neurologist that day and she has been treated by him ever since. We were told that if she had been treated during the critical week, the outcome could have been substantially better! As a husband who comforts his spouse in tears 10 or 12 times a week, even now, after 8 months. I can tell you I sooooo wish we had turned to another group before surgery. She has forever been scarred by blindness and has quit driving at night because of this situation. We will forever question what could have been had she been treated by someone else. I personally should have guided my wife differently and suggested a second opinion on the surgery and insisted that a more qualified doctor review the fact that her vision was bad before the blindness occurred. We have since spoke with a lady whom kept her vision because she was treated in a timely manner. I would highly recommend going elsewhere or at least get a second opinion!

Dr. Silverstein and his staff provide very thorough care. He and his staff listen to the patient. Well organized and caring.

I had cornea transplant surgery and it went OK but Doctor Silverstein did not monitor the eye pressure for 5 months after transplant was done and the pressure was 64 which is over 3 times the normal and I was blind in my left eye when I left Dr Silverstein I went to a glaucoma spec and first thing he did was a laser to bring down pressure but could not save my blind eye. after seeing two opth both said the high pressure destroyed the optic nerve I would not recomend to anybody

I saw Dr. Silverstein because I was considering LASIK but really nervous about it. He and his staff talked to me about all my options and made me feel really good about their expertise and the surgery itself. After considering for a long time, I did it. It is amazing. Life-changing really. I wish I had done it years ago.

Dr Silverstein told my father he needed cataract surgery in May 2009. My father was on several different medications including Flomax. He was told it didn't matter, he could have the surgery. After the fact we find out flomax causes a floppy eye condition (which makes the eye jump around). Well my father had this surgery. After the procedure, the Doctor said Dad had a hard eye to operate on. Dad's pupil was mutilated & he said his vision was double & blurred. Silverstein wanted Dad to have a 2nd surgery (2 weeks later) to correct his eye. I called other Doctors offices & was advised no one should have a another surgery that soon, the eye needed to heal. We called Dr Cavanaugh's office in Overland Park Ks. After reading all the feedback & background info. Dr Cavanaugh said Dad's eye needed to rest before another procedure could be done. Dr Cavanaugh literally had to sew Dad's eye back to together. It had more than 100 sutures in his eye. Dad never regained his full vision. Dr. Cavanaugh… did restore some of his vision that he had lost. Cavanaghn explained that when you are on flomax, extra precautions are needed, he uses a device to keep the eye from moving around, wish Dr Silverstein had been up on this technique!!! Dad has recently passed away, he endured so many things but this was extra torture he did not deserve!!! So I would not never recommend this Dr Silverstein even as Veterinarian.

Dr. Silvertein was great. He was very thorough and informative in doing a comprehensive exam. I will definitely return to him next year. His staff was super friendly and upbeat too.

I had a similar experience with the previous review. Dr. Silverstein had been telling me over a lengthy period of time that there was nothing wrong with my eye (although I was having some vision problems). I went to see another doctor and again, long story short, I required surgery and now, most likely, have permanent vision loss. This seems highly unethical-I'm apparently not the first, nor will be the last to receive this kind of treatment.
