My experience with Dr. Terri Blackwell at the Charlotte ER at 501 Billingsley Rd was one of the most distressing events of my life. I arrived at the emergency room sleep-deprived and mentally exhausted after a highly stressful day. Dr. Blackwell saw me around midnight and began questioning me about things I had said under extreme duress, including references to God and spiritual warfare. My mind was so fatigued I could barely process her questions, yet she proceeded to document a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and recommended a series of medications—without conducting a thorough or compassionate assessment. By the next morning, I felt more mentally clear and was able to advocate for myself and decline the medications. Shockingly, Dr. Blackwell still recommended I be held for 30 days. At that point, I had to involve legal counsel to ensure my rights were protected. The situation worsened when I was transferred to another facility, Davison, where I was accused of “pretending” and… “hiding symptoms”—a claim reportedly based on the observation that I was highly intelligent. That statement, relayed by a nurse to my lawyer, was both insulting and dehumanizing. The entire ordeal was deeply traumatic, leaving me feeling unheard, misjudged, and unjustly labeled. Dr. Blackwell’s approach was not only inappropriate for my condition and the circumstances, but it also lacked the empathy and diligence that patients experiencing mental health crises deserve. A misdiagnosis—especially one made hastily and under such conditions—can have long-term effects, and I am grateful I was able to advocate for myself before irreversible harm was done. Thankfully, I was later seen by Dr. Clemens, whose professionalism and compassion were a stark contrast. She took the time to listen and explained that my episode was stress-induced and triggered by extreme sleep deprivation. She observed me for an additional day, confirmed that I had stabilized with rest, and reassured me that I did not need medication. Her thoughtful guidance helped me begin the process of recovery with dignity and insight, including practical advice on managing future stress and identifying potential triggers. This experience has had a lasting impact on me. I strongly urge others to advocate for themselves or their loved ones, especially in vulnerable moments when compassion and careful judgment are most needed.
