Dr. Thomas Albert Dickinson, MD

I have never written an online review, but the horrific treatment I received from this doctor and his staff motivates me to warn others. I'll try to be concise, although my story is long and filled with frustration and indifference, both from this doctor as well as his staff. Four weeks ago, he performed an endoscopy to determine the cause of the breakthrough pain I was experiencing and discovered four ulcers. Since that day, I have been in such extreme pain, which has been an 8 to 9 on the pain scale, that I was fired from my job due to my inability to tolerate the pain. I have made so many attempts to see this doctor for a pain level that leaves me incapacitated every day that I've lost track of all the calls I've made. Each call was an experience in complete frustration. The nurse would tell me to take my meds, which I've been doing as prescribed, to avoid acidic foods and that ulcers take several weeks to heal. Not once did anyone acknowledge that this level of pain was unusual,… let alone take any action to enable me to see the doctor. During one particularly awful day, I once again called their office, barely able to speak. Unable to convince the nurse that I needed immediate attention after being given completely useless suggestions, I became so angry and overcome with pain that I told her I could see no other alternative to escape the pain than to commit suicide. Rather than alert the doctor that he had a suicidal patient, she called the police. Later, the nurse suggested that I see the PA. I responded by saying that a PA could not examine me and would do nothing for the pain. I eventually did see the PA, who told me that this pain level was highly unusual and that something else must be going on. At that point, she should have contacted Dickinson to arrange for an immediate appointment. Instead, she prescribed a med for cramping, which I don't have, and sent me on my way. I have nothing good to say about Dickinson and his organization. They have treated me with total indifference from the beginning. This degree of negligence is hard to reconcile with a doctor's duty to do everything possible to reduce suffering.

Busy dr. so it is difficult to get into see him. When I am there he spends a lot of time with me and remembers years of history. His concern is genuine. He is one of the most respected dr.s in the area. I once needed a stone removed from inside my bile duct, at the time he was the only dr to have done the procedure without surgery.

Dr. Dickinson has been my doctor and my son's doctor for about 3 years now. My son had a very bad case of ulcerative colitis. At one time, it was so bad that surgery to remove the colon was suggested. He was able to find a treatment without surgery that has helped him to regain a normal life. He seems to treat me and my son with great respect. I also have ulcerative colitis and have needed many colonoscopies. It might be true that there is not a lot of time reporting results after, but he did wait until I was awake, and gave enough information to let me know what was done and what was found. I think he is a good doctor, and would recommend him to others.

I love his staff. They are very courteous, but Dr. D could barely be bothered with my symptoms. He seemed distracted and barely spent 5 minutes listening to me. I know how long it was because I finished a phone call with my family dr. seconds before he walked in. My family doc was able to figure out what was wrong and he's not a tool.

Please do not see this doctor. He is such a waist of money, he does not care about anyone but himself. He gave me an anal exam and told my I was vey cute. Stay away.

Afrer many years of not being diagnosed and going from doctor to doctor. I finally made an appointment to see Dr. Dickerson. He took the time to diagnose me. After running some tests he was able to treat my problem. I have been a patient for over 5 years now. I feel like my quality of life was given back to me. I feel like they care about my life and have worked with me when I couldn't pay. I am so appreciative for finding this specialist.

I saw this physician for Crohn's Disease and finally was told by my surgeon to seek a different physician. I very rarely had office visits where I didn't wait less that 45 minutes - 2 hours, only to have to re-re-re-schedule because he was not even in the office. When I did manage to see him, don't count on an extensive visit, as 5-10 minutes with the patient where common. The nurses and office staff were not a problem, and I witnessed his verbal abuse of his staff on a regular basis. He has the bedside manner is uncaring. I have more information, but limited space

Dr. Dickinson has been treating a family member of mine for stage 4 cirrhosis. He insists it is due to alcohol abuse, even though reports state otherwise. She is only an occasional drinker. Dr. Dickinson referred her to another physician in SLC to see if she could determine the etiology of the disease, likely a rare autoimmune problem, according to the reports. At our last visit, my niece expressed her frustration with being referred from one doctor to another and receiving no help. She is in alot of pain and is in bed 95% of the time. It is difficult for us just to get her in for blood draws, as she is so weak. When my niece expressed her feelings about the situation, Dr. Dickinson stood up and said he woould no longer treat her. He said she was "abusive," and he would no longer see her. He is obviously uncomfortable with feelings and has no "bedside manner". When I tried to discuss it with him, he walked away and would not speak to me. Not only will he not see her, but has… had her banned from seeing anyone in his medical group, which is all of Utah County. I really don't know how one physician has so much power, but it is mean and petty to abandon her treatment and include his entire medical group in the ban. He also would not provide information to Medicaid so we could get a hospital bed delivered to her home. Again...petty and mean spirited. Fortunately another physician provided the information for us. We are trying to locate another physician in Salt Lake County, at great discomfort to my niece and a great inconvenience to her caregivers. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone. He may have good training, but his treatment of patients is despicable.
