My husband has multiple problems. flaccid bladder which doesn't work though his kidneys are fine so that there is a need to use a catheter 4 times a day and he has a small slow growing cancer of the prostate. He is an otherwise healthy 77 years old who eats well and excercizes a hour a day. Because of a bad experience with a uncaring, almost sadistic doctor, he had a fear of catheters (though he is a big brave man otherwise) He was seeking to avoid using one. He read about rebuilding one from your intestine and asked Dr. Keene about it. In a very abrupt manner he said "You are nuts!" THEN HE EXPLAINED WHY. All the other doctors Tom had seen for other things had said, about his catheter fear,"Get over it!" Dr Keene said, "We are going to help you overcome your fear." He has a nurse on staff whose specialty is teaching patients how to catheterize themselves.Tom now does it 4 times a day effortlessly and without blinking an eye. About Tom's cancer, Dr. Keene has gone over every… possible option with us, the benefits, disadvantages and risks of each--the added complications Tom"s catheterizing and age present, despite his health. Dr. Keene strongly advised us to choose watchful waiting with a good reason for his advice and how we would monitor after that. However, he left it totally up to us and said he would not refuse to carry out our wishes, whatever they were. That was 3 years ago and during our watchful waiting, our choice, we have visited him every 6 months for a PSA test for comparison sake, and an exam and a new discussion. Dr Keene is a straight-forward and brutally honest. He does not sugar coat anything. But he respects you; he treats you like an adult and he expects you to participate in your treatment plan and decision making. We also find him to have a wry sense of humor and dry wit which comes out if you are comfortable enough with him to encourage it. We greatly respect and admire him and think he has a fabulous staff as well.

A few more comments following up on the review I left earlier for Dr Keane, following my surgery for prostate cancer, and as further testament to Dr Keane's skill as a surgeon. The catheter was removed 10 days after surgery - no problems. I was immediately dry overnight and 99.9% dry after only another week - only having to be careful when lifting. I saw Joe Turner one of Dr Keane's team at MUSC for help and advice on as rapid return to sexual function as possible. Joe is one great dude. He recommended a vacuum pump for rehabilitation (and for intercourse using a 'ring') and initially Viagra latterly Cialis to help with an erection. I was warned the nerves were slow growing but was delighted to find some natural function returning after about 8 months. I could not not praise Dr Keane, his team and MUSC highly enough!

I am 62 years old, generally in excellent health and was diagnosed with a small, early stage cancer of the prosate (PSA 4.9, Gleason 6) and was recommended to see Dr Keane by my PCP. Dr Keane was superb! He oozed competence, and spent about an hour reviewing my history & biopsy and discussing of all options available. Both my wife and I felt great confidence in him. I decided to go for the RPP. He was able to give me a date for surgery just two weeks later. The surgery went well, the care at MUSC was excellent. Dr Keane sought out my wife immediately afer the surgery to tell her how things had gone and spent soem time with her explaining what to expect. I had minimal pain and bleeding and was able to be discharged 24 hours after the surgery. Follow-up and aftercare were all excellent. Dr Keane personally called me a week after the surgery to see how I was doing and to explain the pathology results to me. I can expect an excellent outcome. I can highly recommend Dr Keane,… he is first class!

Dr. Keane is an amazing doctor!! He is however not for the timid at heart. he is a very honest and straight forward doctor and due to his honesty, I am alive and healthy today. I would recommend ANYONE that has urological problems to see this man. He is a wonderful person and I am forever greatful to him.

Dr. Keane is a total jerk. He is rude and condescending. He has a very superior attitude and talks down to patients. He is not up to date with the state of the art procedures for prostate cancer either. His "medical treatment" is always the "wait and see". Who wants to want and see when they have been diagnosed with cancer? Stay away from this Dr.
