Dr. Thomas Dongyoon Shin

I chose Dr. Shin for my pregnancy and I have regretted it every day since. Dr. Shin is in network for me but him and his negligent staff drew blood for genetic testing and sent it to a lab outside of my network despite reassuring me in person during my visit that it would all be covered by my insurance. I have spent the past SIX months of my pregnancy speaking to Cigna, Dr. Shin's office, Myriad Women's Health as well as New York Presbyterian on a weekly basis to explain that I should not be responsible for an out of pocket bill of close to $8,000 simply because Dr. Sin's office decided to send my results to a lab that was out of network without my consent. However, no one in his office seems to care about this issue and keep passing it on to someone else without a resolution while the bills keep coming in to my house. I do not wish this for any family as it has added an incredible amount of stress that could have easily been avoided.

I had an awful experience my second time seeing Dr. Shin. I went to see him because I had been experiencing moderate to severe breast pain for the last several weeks, which my psychiatrist and I felt could be linked to a hormonal shift given various factors. When I was weighed by a nurse at the beginning of my visit, I made sure to tell her I am in recovery from an eating disorder and that I would not like to know my exact weight. She completely understood and was very respectful of my request. When I saw Dr. Shin, both the nurse and myself let him know that I didn’t want to discuss any specific numbers regarding my weight. He finished my breast exam and told me he wanted to take a look at my weight between our last visit (about four or five months prior) and now, and to meet him in his office next door to the examination room. When I arrived, he told me exactly how much weight I had gained since my last visit, completely disrespecting my request. He also proceeded to tell me,… multiple times, that the amount of weight I had gained was a “significant percentage of my total weight.” I was in complete shock at his lack of professionalism and respect for my wishes. I told him that I firmly believe my weight gain and breast pain was hormonal, because I had recently gone off a medication and was experiencing intense withdrawal effects, and that my lifestyle had not otherwise changed: I was still eating healthy meals and working out 5-6 times per week. Dr. Shin was incredibly condescending and refused to even entertain the idea that this could be a hormonal issue, but finally put me on a different, lower-dose birth control after I continued to insist he do so. I understand that he is a physician, but I know my lifestyle and my body better than he does. I left the appointment in tears, deeply triggered by the concrete discussion about my weight. I have since been in what I would describe as an eating disorder relapse: I have been working out more, eating less, and losing weight at an unhealthy rate. This could have been avoided if Dr. Shin simply used different language and respected my request to not know anything concrete about my weight. He could have told me that I have gained weight without telling me how much, and reminding me that what I have gained is “a significant percentage of my weight.” I am writing this review so that others can hopefully avoid a triggering experience with regards to weight and disordered eating. In other words, if you have a past with (an) eating disorder(s) or are sensitive about conversations regarding weight in general, I would suggest you avoid Dr. Shin - he does not have the proper bedside manner to treat patients with a history of that.

Delivered my two sons and will be performing my tubal ligation soon. He is very knowledgeable and caring. He is gentle and takes the time to really listen to your concerns and answer your questions.

Dr. Shin is professional and kind. He makes you feel comfortable and seems to have experience, is fast and focused. I would refer a friend or family member to him without a second thought.

Amazing doctor. Guided me through my 24 hour labor. He is knowledgeable, calm and resourceful. Had a great experience with my 1st baby, going back to him for my second. Being a patient of his OB group was so reassuring, all great doctors. The experience after my delivery(post-partum unit) I cannot say so many great things for NYP but medically I was given the best care.

Dr. Shin delivered 2 of my 3 children. He is wonderful.

Dr. Shin was the Dr. on call when my real OB/GYN was away on vacation. I was going through a terrifying ectopic preganancy and miscarriage over the course of a few weeks. He was completely available to me by phone and always called me back within 20 minutes. He gave me invaluable information, reassurance and helped me through a scary, painful process every time I needed him. He even called me at home a few times to follow up with me and discuss test results. I am grateful that he was the Dr. on call when mine was away.
