Dr. Van Ann Quynh Tran, MD

Dr. Tran actually changed my life and I am so, so beyond happy I found her. I was honestly nervous at first because I couldn't really find any reviews about her. But since she was part of the thyroid eye disease (TED) team, I decided to just take the leap. Everything went absolutely amazing. I have TED due to Graves Disease and my daily symptoms were not fun; from extreme sensitivity to light, to constant tearing and red eyes that made it hard to get sleep. I couldn't wear contacts anymore because my dry and bulging eyes would just pop them right back out. I had to settle for glasses, but I had to be careful not to push them up too much, or else they would hit my eyes. Not to mention the massive toll it took on my mental/emotional health; I couldn't recognize myself in the mirror anymore and it was so, so hard to go out in public because I always looked so "bugged out" and surprised, as in, you can always see a lot of the whites of my eyes above my irises. I was told by someone close… to me that my eyes even looked kind of pointy with the way they protruded out so much. I avoided cameras like the plague and still haven't taken any engagement photos with my fiancé despite having been engaged for 2 years. My bulging eyes were very, very apparent. It had been around 3 years now, that my eyes have been bad after RAI therapy. They didn't necessarily get worse, but they never, never got better. Since I was in this "stable" phase, Dr. Tran was able to help me move forward with the surgery I wanted: orbital decompression to both sides. Fat was removed from behind both my eyes and since my left eye bulged more than the right, I had some lateral bone removal there, too. I am only 5 days post-op and I have 0 pain. My eyes have already sunk back almost half a centimeter each, which is crazy, in the best way, and I was told that it should only be getting better from here on out for recovery. I have to really force myself not to cry when I look in the mirror now. I recognize myself again. I can confidently start planning my wedding now. She gave me my face back. Even right after surgery, I was able to sleep well because my eyes weren't flooding with tears from them not being able to fully close. I don't have to live in sunglasses anymore. I can push my glasses all the way up! My bruising has already been getting better. I have seen other ophthalmologists at her office while she was gone just to ask them further questions and everyone was surprised at my swift healing. She did amazing with my surgery. Not only this, but she is very thorough. I bring a whole list of questions for her to answer every time I come and she makes sure to answer every single one for me. For my first appointment, I did bring up Tepezza, which is an infusion treatment for TED. I preferred surgery, but wanted to know more about Tepezza. Dr. Tran is definitely keeping up to date on what the evidence is saying about this treatment, which I am very, very happy about. During my first couple of appointments, she also called in the endocrinologist (Dr. Daniel J Toft) who is part of the TED team. Both specialists were right there in the same room, answering all of my questions and educating me. Even during my exchange with my endocrinologist, Dr. Tran was furiously typing away to make sure she made note of everything we were saying so that she could give me the best treatment possible. She can be quick, but do not worry because she is amazing and thorough. I am so lucky to have found her. I live in the south suburbs of Chicago and going to UI Health in the city to see her (and Dr. Toft) is well, well worth the almost hour drive there. I cannot thank her enough.

Dr Tran removed a cyst from my eyelid. She was very kind and proficient.
