I have a very rare cancer, Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor of the esophagus (GIST). Less than 0.3% of cancers diagnosed each year are esophageal GIST. I was impressed to find that Dr. Tap has about 15 patients with esophageal GIST that he is following/treating. I had been referred to Dr. Tap for a second opinion by another oncologist who was aggressively recommending a esophagectomy - radical surgery with many risks and frequent serious complications. Dr. Tap's experience has been that GIST that is located only in the esophagus has been able to be kept in check by the targeted therapy drug, Gleevec without requiring surgery - what a relief! He carefully monitors my tumor with CT and PET scans every 3 months at this stage. Dr. Tap is also involved with a number of clinical drug trials for new potential targeted therapies for GIST. He also speaks at conferences including GIST support groups like LifeRaft.org I am impressed with his knowledge, experience, and thoroughness reassuring manner… in answering all my questions and concerns - never rushing me. I couldn't be in better hands than Dr. Tap.
